Basic surgical requirements
Regarding the resumption of cutting-edge surgeries and the need for large-scale treatment, Dr. Dang Tran Dat, Head of the Department of Examination and Treatment on Demand (Central Eye Hospital), said that in the past 1-2 weeks, the shortage of supplies has almost fully arrived at the hospital.
Along with maintaining emergency surgery, the Central Eye Hospital has re-deployed and maintained surgery to treat eye diseases, after a period of interruption due to a shortage of medical supplies.
The most popular of these is cataract surgery. There are quite a few types of lenses available, and especially high-quality lenses are already in stock. Although the quantity is still limited, surgery can be resumed.
According to Dr. Dat: "The winning units have already bid but need to wait for the time to order from the manufacturer, so there is a delay of 4-6 weeks and cannot have the full quantity immediately. Therefore, after Tet, these materials will be more fully available."
About 1-2 months ago, the Central Eye Hospital was short of gloves, medical equipment and supplies. The biggest reason for the shortage was the limited participation of contractors, who also suffered from supply disruptions. In addition, bidding must follow regulations, while some items have quite special bidding conditions, such as only one supplier, so supplies arrive late.
Difficult surgery, very few units perform it
Dr. Dat added that emergency surgery and also the spearhead of the Central Eye Hospital's specialty is vitreoretinal surgery.
"This technique is currently performed by two units in Vietnam: the Central Eye Hospital and the Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital. Medical supplies for these surgeries have arrived at the hospital and are quite adequate, meeting the needs of patients who need intervention relatively well," said Dr. Dat.
The Central Eye Hospital has modern machines, meeting all emergency surgeries of the ophthalmology sector. The equipment has been maintained and is ready for surgery. It is expected that with the newly equipped machines and supplies, it can be used comfortably for 6 - 8 months, and enough time to deploy the next bidding packages, according to the implementation instructions of the new Bidding Law with special equipment and supplies, only one supplier.
Refractive surgery and pediatric eye diseases
According to the Central Eye Hospital, refractive surgery is in high demand, with hundreds of cases per month. After a recent interruption due to equipment needing maintenance, the equipment now meets the conditions for surgery. This is a technique that the doctors at the Central Eye Hospital have many years of experience with, along with modern equipment, and the cost is also "more modest" than some units, so in recent years, patients in provinces and cities have chosen this service, with hundreds of cases per month. Health insurance patients enjoy benefits according to regulations.
Faced with the reality that there are pediatric patients with indications for strabismus and ptosis surgery waiting to be operated on, Dr. Dat said that medical supplies for surgery such as sutures and biological materials are arriving at the hospital and are expected to be available this week.

A very clear characteristic of this year is that due to economic difficulties, most contractors are waiting for the winning bid results before placing orders, so they cannot immediately have enough materials after the bidding is completed, but only a certain quantity.
After winning the bid and having the exact figures, they place orders with the manufacturer, instead of stockpiling them like every year to have enough materials to supply immediately. Therefore, there is a certain delay in supply.
However, the winning bidders have provided medical supplies and they will be stable after Tet.
The hospital board of directors as well as departments and offices are trying their best, together with urging the contractor to supply according to the contract, the hospital has made a list of patients waiting for surgery. When the supplies arrive, the patients will be invited for surgery.
The hospital explains clearly to the patient, the patient cooperates, ensures smooth treatment, ensures the patient's rights in terms of expertise and health insurance.
