According to Tuoi Tre Online reporters, as of the afternoon of November 28, in the emergency area of Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital, there were still many patients having to share a bed.
A patient's relative said that because two patients were lying on one hospital bed, it was quite cramped, so the patients came up with "solutions" such as one patient lying down, one patient sitting, or two patients lying facing each other. When they wanted to be more comfortable, one patient would lie on the bed, and the other patient would spread a mat on the floor to lie on.
On the morning of November 29, through direct surveys in the emergency areas, intensive care units and inpatient areas of Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital, as well as through the hospital's report, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health recorded a local overload situation in the hospital's emergency department.
The number of emergency patients has increased in recent days, leading to a temporary shortage of hospital beds, requiring the use of measures that do not ensure patient comfort.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital is a specialized hospital for tuberculosis and lung diseases with a scale of 960 inpatient beds (before April 2024, it was 800 inpatient beds). The bed capacity at this hospital in the past 11 months was 103.9%.
Faced with the hospital's overload situation, at this working session, Mr. Tang Chi Thuong, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, requested Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital to urgently implement a number of solutions.
Specifically, the hospital will arrange more beds in the inpatient departments, with a total of about 50 beds expected. The Department of Health will mobilize reserve beds to support Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital if the hospital needs them.
In addition, the hospital organizes examination and screening of patients being monitored and treated in the emergency department, transferring patients who do not meet the emergency criteria to inpatient departments with additional beds.
In addition, the hospital deployed a specialized working group to improve the quality of the emergency department, directly directed by the hospital director.
These are things that need to be done immediately, but there are some things the hospital needs to continue to improve in the coming time.
That is to improve the infrastructure and necessary equipment to enhance the capacity to treat seriously ill patients in each clinical department; applying digital transformation to help the emergency department promptly grasp the situation of hospital beds in inpatient departments to transfer patients.
At the same time, develop and update admission criteria for emergency departments and inpatient departments; strengthen counseling activities, support activities for patients and their families, and survey patient dissatisfaction at the emergency department and inpatient departments of the hospital.
Not only Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital, the Department of Health has requested hospital directors to review and inspect the implementation of: "Recommend strengthening the implementation of activities to improve the emergency capacity of hospitals and medical examination and treatment facilities in Ho Chi Minh City" to ensure the quality of treatment and emergency care for patients in the last months of the year.
This is the time when the number of patients coming for examination, treatment and emergency care often increases compared to the whole year.
Will improve patient overcrowding
The Department of Health said it will continue to listen to feedback from the press and people, and closely coordinate with departments and hospitals to improve the overload situation and ensure quality in medical examination and treatment in the area.
Previously, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management of the Ministry of Health sent a document requesting the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health to urgently verify and clarify the contents reflected by the press, promptly correct the direction...
