Stick to the sample structure
The 10th grade exam for the 2025-2026 school year is the first exam under the 2018 general education program with many new points in question structure and test making. Notably, there are 2 new test formats being applied: short answer test and true-false test. Along with that, the literature exam will limit the use of materials in textbooks to overcome the situation of memorizing or copying content of available documents.
In order for 9th grade students as well as staff and teachers of schools in the city to have specific directions in organizing teaching and reviewing, at the end of August 2024, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training officially announced the format structure and sample questions for the subjects: math; literature, English, history and geography, natural sciences, information technology, civic education; and affirmed that this is the basis for building a question bank and making 10th grade exams according to the 2018 General Education Program.
The Hanoi Department of Education and Training recommends that secondary schools direct professional teams to research and apply exam format structures suitable for each subject so that grade 9 students can become familiar with them; strengthen the construction of question banks and test matrices according to the requirements of the subject program; encourage the construction of digital libraries of test questions, surveys, and sharing with educational institutions in the area to exchange and support the effective implementation of testing and assessment methods and forms.
In line with the above spirit, schools have actively built test and assessment question banks in accordance with the format and structure of the sample questions. During regular and periodic tests, schools have implemented the form of room mixing, cross-scoring, writing on test papers, etc. to practice for students. During the final test of the first semester, 9th grade students in all areas took the common questions of the district/county Department of Education and Training; the form and method of testing are the same as the 10th grade exam. From the survey results, schools have assessed the actual quality of students' knowledge, thereby implementing teaching, learning and review measures to ensure knowledge for students.
Practice through practice tests, right?
In early January 2025, many mock exams for the 10th grade exam were organized by non-public schools and tutoring centers. Like every year, these mock exams attracted a large number of interested students and parents to register.
This year, Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School (Cau Giay campus) is the first unit to organize a mock exam for grade 10 students. Specifically, the school will organize a mock exam for 3 subjects: Math, Literature, and English on January 5, 2025. Participants are grade 9 students of the school and grade 9 students across the city. The purpose of the mock exam is to help students evaluate their learning process, thereby having a suitable study and review plan, ready for the official exam.
In addition to Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School, some cultural training centers in Hanoi are also busy organizing the first trial exam - the 10th grade exam for students. Although there is no final plan for the third subject, the three main trial exams organized by the units are still math, literature and English.
As a parent who registered her child for the mock exam in January 2025, Ms. Lam Quynh Mai, residing in Thanh Xuan district, shared that she always hopes her child can participate in the mock exams so that he can quickly join the competition and increase his awareness of studying and reviewing.
“There are still about 5 months until the 10th grade exam, but my child has not really studied seriously. I want him to take a practice test to see where his knowledge is, what his score is, and if he does not try hard, it will be very difficult to get into the school he wants,” Ms. Mai shared. This parent also said that from now until the end of April, if she sees any school or center organizing a practice test, she will register for her child to try.
Affirming that the purpose of mock exams is good, many teachers believe that parents and students should not abuse or indulge in mock exams too much, because the factors that determine the results of the exam are knowledge and psychology.
“What students should do is to grasp the knowledge taught by teachers in class, do their homework diligently; study by themselves, update the school and district question banks; and practice their knowledge through the Department's sample questions. Students should not have the mentality of practicing after finishing the program, but practice as they learn; practice thoroughly the knowledge they have learned...”, a math teacher in Hanoi advised.
Principal of Phu Thi Secondary School (Gia Lam District) Vu Thi Lan Anh said that from now until the end of the school year, there will be many surveys conducted with 9th grade students. Basically, both teachers and students are trying their best to achieve high results in the surveys as well as the official exams. The learning and review process really needs the companionship and cooperation of parents in taking care of nutrition and health to reduce pressure and increase determination for students.
