Protect, restore and develop green lim forests

Việt NamViệt Nam22/06/2024

At Ben En National Park, green lim trees are currently scattered over most of the natural forest areas, with an area of over 10,500 hectares. Of which, green lim trees are concentrated in Dien Ngoc and Song Chang areas, with an area of over 300 hectares, with a diameter of about 30 - 45cm.

Protect, restore and develop green lim forests Green Lim planted in Ben En National Park.

In recent years, Ben En National Park has implemented synchronous measures to protect special-use forest areas and prioritized monitoring of existing concentrated distribution areas of green lim species, focusing on conservation and development of native green lim species. From 2011 to June 2024, with State budget funds, cooperation and sponsorship programs, Ben En National Park has implemented many silviculture projects and afforestation with green lim trees.

To have seeds for planting and providing seedlings for units in the region, Ben En National Park staff went deep into the forest to find and select natural green lim trees with good growth, about 12 years old or more, as parent trees to collect seeds to grow seedlings. Each year, the unit harvests about 300 kg of seeds to serve the growing of seedlings.

By June 2024, Ben En National Park had planted 338.25 hectares of green lim. Of which, the cooperation project with Canon Vietnam Group planted 160 hectares, the afforestation project after thinning acacia planted 54.88 hectares, Gaia Nature Conservation Center planted 106.87 hectares to enrich the forest; the remaining area was planted according to the replacement afforestation project and the project "Conservation and development of green lim species" of Ben En National Park. In general, the newly planted lim forest is cared for according to technical procedures, growing and developing well. Green lim in natural forests is always protected and developed well to prevent illegal exploitation.

Green lim is a large, durable tree, often used in construction and high-end furniture. Green lim mushroom is also very valuable in human health care. Thanh Hoa has relatively suitable climate and terrain conditions for the growth and development of green lim. Green lim is a typical forestry tree, native to Thanh Hoa province. In the province, green lim is most distributed in the districts of Nhu Xuan, Nhu Thanh, Thuong Xuan, Cam Thuy, Ba Thuoc, Thach Thanh, Ha Trung... This is an endangered, rare species, with limited exploitation and use.

Recognizing the economic, ecological and biodiversity conservation value of green lim, before 1945 the French organized the planting of tens of thousands of hectares of green lim in Cam Thuy and Tho Xuan... Due to over-exploitation and decades of unconnected development, green lim forests are increasingly depleted. In January 2018, the whole province had nearly 20,000 hectares of lim (pure and mixed species, scattered trees), equivalent to more than 10% of the previous green lim forest area. Due to many reasons, the quantity and quality of green lim trees are still very limited, not commensurate with the potential and strengths of the province.

Implementing forestry programs and projects, Thanh Hoa province has focused on directing the implementation of many solutions to protect, restore and develop lim forests. In the first months of 2024, localities, units and forest owners in the province have proactively provided training on techniques for planting and caring for green lim; organized households that have received forestry land contracts to prepare the site well; provided materials and "input" seedlings, and directed the planting of 50 hectares of new green lim forests mixed with other forestry trees.

As a result, from 2018 to June 2024, the whole province has planted pure and mixed green lim trees, scattered with other tree species such as bamboo, Acacia mangium, natural regeneration, and additional planting of nearly 8,000 hectares of green lim forest, bringing the total number of green lim forests in Thanh Hoa to nearly 28,000 hectares. In general, newly planted lim trees are cared for, protected, grow and develop well.

Talking to us, Head of the Forest Use and Development Department (Provincial Forest Protection Department) Nguyen Dinh Thai said: In order to restore and develop green lim forests, the Provincial Forest Protection Department has been coordinating with the People's Committees of districts to implement a number of solutions such as promoting awareness for people and communities about the economic, scientific and environmental values of green lim trees associated with community life. Selecting green lim trees that grow and develop well, meeting the standards for recognition as superior trees for breeding, proactively sourcing seeds for nursery. Mobilizing capital sources to effectively restore and develop green lim forests. Proactively protecting the safety of existing green lim forests. Coordinating with ministries, branches at the central level, international organizations to call for financial support, technical support for sustainable forest management and forest certification for natural forests, planted forests with green lim, to meet the requirements of the world market and increase the added value of the forestry sector. The goal is to preserve, restore, and sustainably develop the green lim tree gene source, promote cultural, scientific, and environmental values, and at the same time improve the quality and economic efficiency of lim forests.
