The hot weather in recent days has affected agricultural production activities of the people. To overcome the difficulties caused by the weather, the agricultural sector and localities along with the people in the province have been implementing many solutions to protect crops.

Protecting crops in hot weather People of Dong Cuong ward (Thanh Hoa city) water crops during the hot season.

The hot weather occurred right at the time of the spring rice harvest, so people in localities in the province proactively changed their working hours to ensure their health and the progress of the crop. In vegetable growing areas in the province, people proactively installed net houses and automatic irrigation systems to provide moisture, ensuring the growth and development of vegetables. Ms. Phung Thi Huan in Thieu Hoa town shared: “My family has 3 sao of specialized seasonal vegetables. During hot days, my family actively waters vegetables in the early morning and late afternoon, and pulls up sunshade nets to protect the plants from 10am to 4pm every day. My family also takes advantage of the time to prepare the land and plant vegetables when the outside temperature is cool.”

In the 2023 spring crop, the total cultivated area of the province reached nearly 191,044 hectares of various crops. According to the agricultural sector, by May 28, the province had harvested more than 97,830 hectares of spring crops and the hot weather had not caused damage to agricultural production in the province. According to the Thanh Hoa Hydrometeorological Station, the hot weather in the coming time will be more severe than the average of many years, including particularly severe heat waves lasting for many days. Extreme weather poses many difficulties and challenges for agricultural production when water levels in dams, rivers, streams and key irrigation works are low.

According to Thanh Hoa Irrigation Department, it is estimated that the whole province has about 18,095 to 22,535 hectares of crops at risk of drought and water shortage, affecting productivity.

According to the Thanh Hoa Irrigation Department, it is estimated that the whole province has about 18,095 to 22,535 hectares of crops at risk of drought and water shortage, affecting productivity. The water shortage area is mainly concentrated in the tail of the canal and high fields that are difficult to irrigate. Faced with the above situation, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has coordinated with the People's Committees of districts, towns and cities to develop plans to prevent and combat drought, water shortage, saltwater intrusion, and solutions to respond to different scenarios of meteorology, hydrology and water resources due to the impact of El Nino.

To ensure water sources for crops and agricultural production, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development also directed irrigation units to strictly implement irrigation and drought prevention plans from the end of the spring crop to the 2023 summer-autumn crop. At the same time, assign specific staff to monitor and inspect fields, strengthen regional and plot banks to avoid water loss causing local water shortages. Based on the specific situation of water resources and water supply capacity, localities organize to adjust the crop season and crop structure accordingly. In addition, irrigation units and agricultural service cooperatives in localities need to regulate and distribute water reasonably and economically, avoiding water loss or widespread water taking causing waste. For areas at risk of insufficient water supply for the whole crop, the agricultural sector should study and adjust the sowing schedule to avoid severe drought and saltwater intrusion coinciding with the sensitive growth period of crops. Localities encourage people to invest in implementing advanced, water-saving irrigation solutions for upland crops, prioritizing meeting minimum water needs during water-sensitive periods of crops, especially fruit trees and crops of high economic value.

In the immediate future, the agricultural sector recommends that farmers regularly monitor weather developments to strengthen measures to combat heat and prevent diseases that often occur in the summer for each crop. People should regularly ensure adequate irrigation water and provide appropriate nutrients according to the needs of each crop. Along with that, people are encouraged to invest in installing net houses and automatic sprinkler systems to maintain humidity and ensure suitable temperatures for crops.
