Will storm No. 3 cause peach blossoms to be scarce and prices to increase for Tet 2025?

In September 2024, storm No. 3 Yagi hit the North, causing flooding and killing many crops, including Nhat Tan peaches. Many people are worried that Tet peaches will be scarce and prices will increase.

Ms. Khac Mai (in Nhat Tan village, Tay Ho district, Hanoi) said that her family has been trying to conquer the elegant and difficult peach variety for many years. However, in the 2024 Tet crop, the peach blossoms bloomed early, causing her family to lose revenue. And this year, due to the impact of storm No. 3 in September 2024, nearly half of her family's peach garden died due to prolonged flooding.

After Typhoon Yagi, my family’s peach garden in the Me Linh area lost 400 trees, the damage was immeasurable. If those peach trees were still there today and were properly cared for to sell during Tet, their value would be up to tens of billions of dong ,” Ms. Mai said sadly.

The peach trees are budding, preparing to bloom right on the occasion of Lunar New Year 2025.

Also affected by storm No. 3, Mr. Ky Anh's peach garden with more than 1,000 trees, including 400 Nhat Tan ancient peach trees and 600 peach branches, was completely lost after the floodwaters receded. " After just one night, there was not a single peach tree left in my garden. The whole family could only stand by and watch helplessly. Wherever the floodwaters rose, they all died, " Mr. Ky Anh recalled. According to him, these Nhat Tan ancient peach trees, just to buy them (not including care), cost 15 - 20 million VND/tree. Thus, his family suffered losses of tens of billions of VND.

Many other peach farmers in Nhat Tan also suffered similar losses due to their gardens being destroyed by storms and floods.

However, when asked whether the mass death of peach trees due to the impact of storm No. 3 would cause a shortage of peaches for Tet 2025, many peach farmers affirmed that it would not.

Ms. Khac Mai explained: “ Although many Nhat Tan peach trees died in the 2025 Tet crop, those who trade and sell Tet peach trees in Hanoi have proactively contacted in advance to import a lot of peach trees from Lai Chau, Son La, etc. Currently, the market has all kinds and prices, from peach branches, peach trees, small trees, to ancient peach trees with rental prices of up to hundreds of millions of VND .”

Peach blossoms for Tet At Ty 2025 are diverse in design and type and are confirmed to be in stock.

In fact, Ms. Khac Mai’s family also rented land to grow and care for the peach trees in Sapa because the climate and soil here are suitable for this type of tree. “ The most beautiful and valuable peach trees are all taken care of by my family in the garden in Sapa, and only shipped to Hanoi for sale during Tet. Luckily, these peach trees were not affected by Typhoon Yagi ,” she said.

Ms. Mai also compared that last year's Tet season, because of the leap year of February, peach blossoms bloomed early, causing peach farmers to lose their harvest. This year's Tet, although the impact of Typhoon Yagi was not small, in return, the peach trees bloomed on time, making peach growers excited and still hoping for a "warm and prosperous" Tet season.

Because the market for Tet peach blossoms is not scarce, the price of Tet peach blossoms this year is almost unchanged from last year. For big and beautiful peach blossoms, the rental price ranges from 10 to 20 million VND. As for small trees, suitable for placing on the table, the selling price ranges from 1.5 to 4 million VND.

As for Nhat Tan peach trees, the rental price for big and beautiful trees is still around 20 - 30 million VND.

Peach buyers carefully examine each flower bud and branch on a peach tree.

Traders at the Tet flower and ornamental plant market in Lac Long Quan said that due to the difficult economic situation, consumers are more cautious about spending than usual. Large, expensive ornamental plants are often rented by customers to save money, while small plants are bought boldly.

" This year's market is not as crowded as last year, but it is not too quiet either. In my opinion, the main reason is that consumers wait until closer to Tet to have time to go shopping. At the same time, they are also wary of erratic weather that could affect the quality of the trees, so they do not want to buy early ," said Mr. Manh Quan, a kumquat seller on Lac Long Quan Street.
