TP - “There is much glory but also much suffering” is the confession of many teachers in the context of the teaching profession being too much affected by the social environment. School violence not only happens to students but also to teachers, and is even more serious.

White violence

The whole school yard was quiet with the gym teacher's command, suddenly there was a shout of "let's go" along with the sound of school supplies falling. On the second floor, a student rushed out of the classroom, ran down the hallway shouting and screaming and then down to the school yard. Teacher Ngoc Minh's formation and team suddenly became chaotic, he also had a heart attack. Although he was used to this image, teacher Minh still couldn't help but be shocked every time this student appeared.

Every school year, Mr. Ngoc Minh's school (a primary school in Hanoi) has a few students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Each student has a different behavior and teachers have to get used to it gradually. Some students react suddenly, others tend to get angry and violent with their friends. Ms. Thu Hien, the homeroom teacher of the school's 5th grade, said that students with violent tendencies are often very difficult to control. During class, a student suddenly stood up and slapped the student sitting behind him in the face even though he was seriously studying. The student was hit unexpectedly, did not know the reason and started crying. The class was in chaos and Ms. Hien had to act as judge.

The principal of a secondary school in Hoan Kiem district said that there are parents in the school who have sent their children from grade 6 to grade 9 this year but have not paid a single penny in tuition, even though it is only 155,000 VND/month. “They have salaries and income but do not pay tuition because they think the government should pay for their children’s education.

The ridiculous situations of teachers with students with mental illness are almost found in every school in Hanoi from primary to secondary school. But it is worth mentioning that teachers are lonely in teaching and supporting these students. According to Ms. Hien, normal schools have the task of inclusive education, which means that there are students with disabilities studying together, but only with mild disabilities. Recently, the number of students with mental illnesses such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, etc. has been increasing.

Many parents, for some reason, do not accept the reality of their children's illness, so they do not take them to see a doctor or get evaluated. Therefore, they consider teaching children to be the teacher's responsibility, and they demand a lot. For example, when they report that their child is violent with friends, they say it is the teacher's responsibility to manage the class. When their child causes disorder in the classroom, they say it is because the teacher does not know how to manage the students... "We, teachers at normal schools, have been trained in inclusive education, but we are not specialized teachers. Students with severe mental illness need support and intervention from teachers and specialized schools. But no matter what, parents do not take their children to see a doctor, and because there is no conclusion from the hospital, the school is forced to accept students because it is the duty of a public school," Ms. Hien confided.

According to Ms. Hien, every year when a homeroom teacher has a student with ADHD or autism, the teacher's hair turns gray from the stress and worry. The class size is large, teaching is tiring, and there is also the worry of caring for and supporting students with severe mental illness. Many times these students go to the bathroom in class without realizing it, and the teacher has to deal with it. "The saddest thing is that teachers do not receive support from parents," Ms. Hien said. Whenever a student "acts up," Ms. Hien returns home in a state of stress.

As society develops, parents have another weapon, social media, so teachers are under more and more pressure. Ms. Nguyen Thi Van Hong, Principal of Chuong Duong Secondary School, Hoan Kiem, shared that many days she had to stay at school until 10-11pm to settle disputes between students. The absurd thing is that parents demand that the school force other students to play with their children. When students fight outside of school with students from other schools, parents also come to the school to demand compensation. The pressure is even greater because many parents do not care about right and wrong, when they see their children being bullied or isolated in class, they go straight to school to face the homeroom teacher.

School violence against teachers is not only a hot story of violence caused by physical attacks by parents, or even by their own students, but also stories that cannot be told to anyone. According to the reporter's records, in many schools in Hanoi, there are some parents who do not take responsibility for contributing legal fees for their children.

The principal of a junior high school in Hoan Kiem district said that there are parents who have sent their children from grade 6 to grade 9 this year but have not paid a single penny in tuition, even though it is only 155,000 VND/month. “They have salaries and income but do not pay tuition because they think the government should pay for their children’s tuition. This has been happening since elementary school,” the principal said. The frustration and anger that teachers have to spend their salaries to pay tuition, boarding fees, and health insurance for students is real for families who are not poor but are irresponsible with their children.

Pressure from parents

Ho Chi Minh City National University has just announced the scientific and technological topic "Research on teachers' lives in Binh Thuan, Tay Ninh and Hau Giang provinces". The survey results show that, surprisingly, teachers are under the greatest pressure from students' parents. Accordingly, over 70% of teachers said that they are under pressure or very much pressure from parents. Nearly 41% of teachers have intended to change careers due to mental violence from parents.

Many managers and teachers at all levels share the same opinion that currently, pressure from parents on teachers is an alarming issue. Many parents have too high expectations, often deeply interfere in teaching work, and even put pressure on grades. They constantly monitor, ask questions and request detailed reports on their children's learning situation via Zalo or Facebook groups...

More worryingly, some teachers also reported that some parents have seriously offended teachers, such as going directly to school to quarrel, curse, or even assault teachers when their children are criticized, reminded, or do not get high scores. Many teachers have to face threats or defamation on social networks... This not only makes teachers feel tired, stressed, lose self-control and inspiration in their work, seriously affects the quality of education, and creates a bad image in the eyes of students about the relationship between school and family.
