Ensuring safety for livestock during hot weather

The summer of 2023 is experiencing many severe heat waves with high temperatures. This will affect the resistance and development ability of livestock, creating favorable conditions for many types of livestock and poultry diseases to break out. In this situation, livestock farmers in the province have been actively implementing solutions and recommendations from the agricultural sector to protect livestock and poultry.

Ensuring safety for livestock during hot weather Mr. Ngo Dinh Tuan, Xuan Giang commune (Tho Xuan) sprayed water on the roof to reduce the temperature of the pig pen.

Right from the time of changing seasons, there were no prolonged heat waves, but Mr. Ngo Dinh Tuan, Xuan Giang commune (Tho Xuan) proactively implemented solutions to prevent heat for his family's wild boar herd. Mr. Tuan said: "When the hot weather lasts for a long time, the pigs are susceptible to many diseases, so I have reinforced the barn, opened many windows and installed ventilation fans to circulate air when necessary. For pigs, bathe them 1 to 2 times a day, give them enough food and supplement vitamins, feed them in the early morning or cool afternoon during prolonged hot weather. In addition, the barn is cleaned and disinfected regularly to reduce the heat; pigs are regularly vaccinated against septicemia, foot and mouth disease, blue ear disease, etc. Around the barn, the family plants more trees to create shade. Especially on hot days, it is necessary to ensure a regular supply of cool, clean water for animals to drink, and to add salt or electrolytes... If the temperature is too high, it is necessary to spray water on the roof of the barn to reduce the temperature of the roof.

As a locality with a large livestock herd, especially chickens with many large-scale farms, before entering the hot season, Yen Dinh District Agricultural Service Center actively promoted and instructed people on how to protect chickens during prolonged heat waves. The unit also organized training courses to improve livestock farming techniques and inspected and instructed livestock owners to vaccinate livestock and poultry. Ms. Tran Thi Quan, Director of Yen Dinh District Agricultural Service Center, said: When the temperature reaches 38 - 39 degrees Celsius, farmers will see that chickens eat poorly, are weak, have electrolyte imbalances, and have metabolic disorders... Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to adjusting the stocking density for each stage of development of the animals, designing airy and high barns, installing additional cooling misting systems on the roof to help reduce the temperature on sunny days, and preparing a generator system in case of power outages.

In addition, it is necessary to use exhaust fans or blowers to push hot air out of the barn, adjust the bedding down to about 8cm to reduce heat. Farmers also need to proactively supplement nutrition and resistance when raising chickens in hot weather. For cattle, with the physiological characteristic of being intolerant to heat, when the weather is hot, many diseases will arise, and farming efficiency will be low. People need to apply basic heat-resistant measures such as covering with sunshades, spraying water on the roof, installing a misting fan system; increase the amount of green food, feed in the early morning or cool afternoon, provide more drinking water. Especially do not graze cattle during the hot time of the day and on days with high temperatures. Actively vaccinate cattle with all types of vaccines according to the instructions of the veterinary agency.

According to the recommendations of the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, on hot days, livestock often have changes in the absorption and metabolism process, and their eating habits change in a negative direction. Therefore, livestock farmers need to improve their nutrition and supplement minerals and vitamins to improve the resistance of livestock and poultry. In addition, people should pay attention to environmental hygiene in and around the barn and grazing areas; cover the barn to prevent livestock and poultry from getting cold during thunderstorms, tornadoes and sudden heavy rains. For concentrated livestock farms with large numbers, it is advisable to invest in automatic water spray systems and ventilation fans to cool the barns; add water troughs in the summer, and have a reasonable diet. To prevent and control diseases during this hot season, farmers need to prepare enough veterinary medicine; clean and collect livestock waste daily and have appropriate treatment measures, such as: using biogas tanks; Compost organic fertilizers with biological products, spray disinfectants on barns and areas around the barns to prevent harmful bacteria from entering. On hot days, it is also necessary to increase inspection and monitoring of livestock and poultry. If livestock show abnormal signs such as: unsteady walking, fatigue, not eating... it is necessary to quickly check and handle promptly to minimize possible risks.
