(CLO) Authorities said on Tuesday that at least 34 people were killed in Mozambique by super cyclone Chido, after the deadly storm swept across the French island of Mayotte a few days earlier.

More than 300 others were injured by Cyclone Chido, while nearly 23,600 homes and 170 fishing boats were destroyed, Mozambique’s National Institute for Risk and Disaster Management said. In total, more than 175,000 people in Mozambique were affected by the storm.

Typhoon Chido made landfall in Cabo Delgado province on Sunday, killing 28 people, before claiming six more lives in Nampula and Niassa provinces. Rescue teams are still working in the badly damaged areas.

Meanwhile, the government of the French Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte imposed a curfew on Tuesday, with officials earlier comparing the impact of Typhoon Chido on the island to a nuclear war.

The official death toll in Mayotte so far stands at 21, but authorities and rescue services have warned that the final figure could reach into the hundreds or even thousands.

The Mayotte government said the curfew began at 10 p.m. local time and was imposed to prevent looting. Mayotte is one of several islands around the world that are part of France and are administered from the government in Paris.
