In a video posted on Facebook, Mr. Mondlane said he had been assassinated in the Sandton area of Johannesburg, South Africa.
Mr Mondlane had to jump out the back door, sneak out through a hair salon, then flee with his luggage and family.
However, the South African Foreign Ministry said it was unaware of Mr Mondlane's presence in the country and insisted the matter should have been reported to the police.
Politician Venancio Mondlane was the one who rejected the results of the vote announced by Mozambique's electoral authority on October 24, which showed that Daniel Chapo of the ruling Frelimo party won more than 70% of the votes, compared to 20% for Mondlane.
Mr Mondlane declared himself the winner and used social media to call for protests against the election results.
According to the anti-corruption NGO Mozambique, the October 2024 election was the country's most fraudulent election in 25 years.
Election observers, including from the European Union, also pointed to serious irregularities before, during and after the vote, accusing electoral authorities of manipulation to keep the Frelimo party in power.
More than 50 people were seriously injured in clashes with police during protests over the election results, according to Human Rights Watch.
Mozambique temporarily cut off the internet a day after the election results were announced. Access to social media was restricted again on October 31.
