Mr. Le Quoc Minh, Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association, said that the press needs to promote its pioneering role on all fronts, promoting good people, good deeds, good practices, and new models, thereby consolidating and promoting the good values, ethics, and traditional culture of the Vietnamese people.

On the morning of March 18, in Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnam Journalists Association held the 2024 National Conference to summarize the work of 2023 and deploy tasks for 2024.

Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association Le Quoc Minh said that since its establishment (April 21, 1950), the Vietnam Journalists Association has grown in both quantity and quality. From nearly 300 initial members, the Vietnam Journalists Association has now attracted more than 25,000 members, operating in 63 provincial and municipal Journalists Associations, 21 Inter-Associations and 223 affiliated Associations nationwide. Under the leadership, direction and guidance of the Party and State, together with the support and facilitation of the people, over the years, generations of journalists have always strived to fulfill their responsibilities; building an increasingly strong Association, making worthy contributions to the cause of innovation, construction and protection of the Fatherland.

"In the context of difficulties and common challenges of the world, the region and the country, with unprecedented challenges, the press has always been a vanguard force on all fronts. In particular, the press has effectively propagated the policies and guidelines of the Party and State, always closely associated with and accompanied the cause of national construction and protection; information and propaganda work in the press on the implementation of political tasks, economic, social, cultural, defense and security issues, etc. has received attention, focus, and depth, creating positive spread. Information on the foreign affairs activities of Party and State leaders has become a highlight in the overall propaganda picture. Propaganda work to protect the Party's ideological foundation and fight against and refute wrong and hostile views has clearly changed from thinking to content, form and propaganda methods", Mr. Le Quoc Minh commented.

According to the Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association, currently, press agencies are also actively propagating the prevention and fight against corruption and negativity; the fight against signs of degradation in political ideology, ethics, and lifestyle continues to be strongly implemented, increasingly going into depth, substance, bringing high efficiency; propagating the building and development of Vietnamese culture and people.

However, press work in 2023 still faces many difficulties and challenges such as: the risk of the press falling behind in the face of the rapid development of social media; there are still a number of press agencies that have not met the requirements and tasks of information and propaganda in the current situation; there are still a number of journalists showing signs of degradation in political ideology, ethics, lifestyle, "self-evolution", "self-transformation", taking advantage of and abusing their profession, giving themselves "power" to threaten and harass organizations and individuals, violating the law, violating professional ethics... causing outrage in public opinion. The situation of reporters and collaborators being prosecuted, temporarily detained, prosecuted, and tried for violating the law, taking advantage of professional activities for personal gain tends to increase, seriously affecting the image, reputation and public trust in the press.

Reporters and journalists need to be protected while working to produce quality, full-content works.

At the conference, delegates also discussed and shared issues of concern in journalism such as: digital transformation, applying technology to improve propaganda work; managing resident reporters and representative agencies; the press actively promoting foreign affairs activities...

Mr. Duong Danh Huu, Permanent Vice President of the Thanh Nien Newspaper Journalists Association, said that recently, at some permanent agencies, there are still situations where reporters and collaborators violate journalistic ethics; some units, agencies, and departments still obstruct reporters while working... Therefore, the unit would like to recommend that the Association strengthen control and improve the ethics of journalists; management agencies continue to strengthen sanctions and laws to prevent the obstruction of reporters and journalists while working; continue to improve training and propaganda of the Party and State's policies for the journalism team...

Mr. Nguyen Trong Nghia, Head of the Central Propaganda Department, gave a speech at the Conference.

Speaking at the Conference, Mr. Nguyen Trong Nghia, Head of the Central Propaganda Department, acknowledged and highly appreciated the activities of the Vietnam Journalists Association in the past time; at the same time, he also requested that all levels of the Association and journalists and members continue to thoroughly grasp, deeply understand and effectively implement Directive No. 43 of the Secretariat on strengthening the Party's leadership over the activities of the Vietnam Journalists Association in the new situation. In addition, the Vietnam Journalists Association needs to orient press agencies to closely follow the practical cause of innovation and development of the country; current issues, deeply and vividly reflect the breath and pulse of life to have many quality, objective, authentic press works with high combativeness, profound cultural and humanistic values. Each journalistic work must be a convincing message, affecting both the minds and hearts of the public, thereby orienting public opinion, creating social consensus, contributing to strengthening people's trust in the Party, the State, and the cause of national construction and development.

“In 2024, the Vietnam Journalists Association and press agencies need to continue to carry out the task of building a traditional, revolutionary, professional, modern and humane press; strengthen management and orientation of press management agencies; focus on training and building a team of press managers, reporters, editors and collaborators with political will, pure moral qualities and professional expertise to improve the effectiveness of propaganda work. The Vietnam Journalists Association also needs to urgently develop plans and projects to prepare for organizing activities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day in 2025,” Mr. Nguyen Trong Nghia suggested.
