Mr. Le Quoc Minh - Member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, President of the Vietnam Journalists Association delivered the closing speech at the 2024 National Press Forum.
Discussion sessions suggest innovative solutions, enhance strategy and practicality for press agencies
In his closing speech at the forum, Mr. Le Quoc Minh - Member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association stated: “We have just successfully organized 1 opening session and 10 discussion sessions on 10 key issues of Vietnamese journalism, with the participation of 60 speakers, domestic and international guests, attracting thousands of participants. There were many enthusiastic presentations, comments, and discussions from journalists, managers, and researchers for the 2024 National Press Forum”.

The President of the Vietnam Journalists Association summarized the highlights and concluded each discussion session. Specifically, the first session : "Enhancing Party spirit and orientation in journalism activities" was chaired by Journalist Song Ha, Member of the Editorial Board of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Chairman of the Nhan Dan Newspaper Journalists Association.
Accordingly, the presentations and discussions have raised the successes, experiences, difficulties arising from practice and room for policy mechanisms that need to be supplemented - the issues that the press is facing at one level or another...; mentioned the theoretical and practical relationship regarding Party nature and orientation, the role of summarizing practice to elevate theory; The requirement to ensure the accuracy, science, practicality, interestingness, and appeal of the press, thereby attracting the public, orienting, and leading public opinion through one's press works.
Opinions were highly unanimous on the following key issues: The important role of the revolutionary press in disseminating the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's laws and policies; a bridge closely connecting with the people; a vanguard force protecting the Party's ideological foundation, the regime, protecting national and ethnic interests, protecting the great national unity bloc; contributing to fighting against evil and negativity, protecting and honoring beauty and humanistic values.
Delegates participate in in-depth discussion session.
Affirming that Party character and orientation are the red thread running through revolutionary journalism activities, opinions also frankly pointed out the enormous challenges. That is information competition in the digital age, when public psychology and tastes change, and the means change. That is the limitations, weaknesses, and room for innovation that lie within the operating mechanism of the Party's press agencies. That is the stagnation and rigidity of a part of journalists.
In addition, there is a slow innovation in the method of managing the editorial office, directing information, investing in the team and facilities of journalism; the imbalance in expectations about the responsibility of leading the information with the mechanism that has revealed shortcomings, inappropriate investment and the team not keeping up in terms of both capacity, level and courage.
The cultural environment of journalism is the foundation of Vietnamese journalism.
Session 2: " Building a cultural environment for journalism" is coordinated and chaired by Journalist Nguyen Anh Vu, Editor-in-Chief of Culture Newspaper.
Building a cultural journalism environment and cultural journalists has become an indispensable and urgent requirement for all Vietnamese press agencies. The more the press life changes, the more the cultural journalism environment must be established, the more it must be a solid foundation for the Vietnamese press to develop healthily, in the right direction, professionally, modernly but must be truly humane.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi - Former member of the Party Central Committee, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association spoke at discussion session No. 2 - Building a cultural environment for journalism.
Some of the main conclusions that Mr. Le Quoc Minh made about the second session's topic: First, the cultural environment of journalism is a foundation for the Vietnamese press to develop in the right direction and professionally. It is necessary to promote cultural factors in professional activities and in journalistic works; promote humanity, solidarity, mutual love, and strive for the values of "truth, goodness, and beauty", spread good things, fight and refute wrong and negative viewpoints, and build a good spiritual foundation for society.
Second, it is necessary to build a cultural core, from strictly implementing the 6 criteria in building a cultural press agency; 6 criteria of cultural journalists; implementing regulations on the Code of Professional Ethics for Vietnamese Journalists and Rules for Using Social Networks for Journalists; evaluating the cultural "content" of press works in recent times; what must press agencies do to fulfill the role and mission of revolutionary journalism in preserving, building and developing an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity?
Third, does the economic story "fade" the cultural element in journalism activities? According to Mr. Le Quoc Minh, the current reality is that with newspaper offices facing economic difficulties, the consequence is that it creates a burden on the shoulders of journalists and content creators. Meanwhile, the issue of journalism economics must be implemented by a specialized team to ensure it. Press management agencies must be creative and proactive to find a guaranteed economic source, so that journalists can make a living from their journalism profession. Journalists must seek the true and inherent values of journalism. That is humanity, honesty, and fighting for justice.
Delegates participated in in-depth discussion at session 2.
The King and Queen are both “welcomed”
The President of the Vietnam Journalists Association said that content is King. Technology is Queen, the King and Queen were both "welcomed" at the Third Session : " Data journalism and outstanding content strategy " chaired by Associate Professor, Dr. Do Thi Thu Hang, Head of the Professional Department of the Vietnam Journalists Association, with the participation of speaker Kah Whye Lee, Director of Asia, World Association of Journalists and Publishers and 7 experts and leaders of domestic press agencies.
Data journalism has a central position and core role in the development of digital journalism in the world and in Vietnam, and is a strong solution to implement outstanding content strategies and enhance the competitiveness of press agencies. The 4 presentations are the basis for discussion and Q&A, presented at the Forum with the following topics: Outstanding press content strategy - World trends and experiences; Outstanding content strategy of Nhan Dan Newspaper and the role of data journalism; Methods of organizing and implementing data journalism in press agencies in Vietnam; Applying data science to develop outstanding press content.
Journalist Le Quoc Minh - Member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, President of the Vietnam Journalists Association attended a discussion session.
The discussion results show that: First, press agencies for effective outstanding content strategy must develop data journalism. Open data sources, linked data, self-data of press agencies, especially data for analyzing press trends will be the basis for filtering and enriching data, analyzing and evaluating, visualizing data are basic operations to apply data journalism in multimedia storytelling, creating uniqueness and superiority of press content.
Second, to develop data journalism, it is necessary to clearly understand its nature, role, and conditions for implementation, and have a comprehensive solution based on the theory and practice of capacity, resources, world trends, and the public characteristics of each press agency. There will only be outstanding content when press agencies innovate in all four areas: product and service strategy, professional activities, public - customer areas, and press and media economics.
The third session: "Data journalism and outstanding content strategy" attracted a lot of attention.
Third, data journalism is an inseparable direction from the flow of Vietnamese journalism. According to Mr. Le Quoc Minh, in order to have sustainable development, in addition to the press agencies themselves proactively researching and finding their own data journalism models and outstanding content strategies, it is necessary to build a professional, modern press and media ecosystem, oriented towards digital journalism. Through this ecosystem, press agencies are able to readily share and connect data.
To do this, the role of guiding, managing and leading agencies such as the Central Propaganda Department; Ministry of Information and Communications; Vietnam Journalists Association is very important. Accordingly, the Central Propaganda Department and the Ministry of Information and Communications need to advise and perfect the Party's guidelines and policies and the State's policies; the Journalists Association has a leading and consulting role in building management models and professional models of press agencies in building this ecosystem.
Journalism in the digital age cannot be separated from technology.
The fourth session : "Investing and applying technology effectively in newsrooms" was moderated by Journalist Nguyen Hoang Nhat, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of VietnamPlus Electronic Newspaper, Vietnam News Agency.
Journalists and experts discuss in depth at discussion session number 4.
According to the 2023-2024 Outlook Report of the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), the focus of investment and development of newsrooms around the world in the coming years will be on Technology and Artificial Intelligence. For Vietnamese press agencies, this is a difficult problem when most newsrooms are not proactive in terms of technology, and are facing a situation where traditional sources of revenue are decreasing day by day.
In that context, the lessons learned from newsrooms that are pioneering innovation, advice from experts from WAN-IFRA (Mr. Kah Whye Lee, Director of Asia), Google (Ms. Nguyen Thuy Duong, Director of News Publisher Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region)... will be the guiding principles for press agencies to learn from and apply in practice.
The presentations and Q&A sessions of the speakers focused on the following issues: Journalism in the digital age cannot be separated from technology, technology is even leading journalism and most large newsrooms will develop towards becoming technology-media corporations. However, to realize that ambition, newsrooms need to diversify their revenue sources and develop digital business models. Thus, investing in technology is also aiming at creating new revenue sources, replacing traditional revenue sources.
Delegates attending discussion session number 4.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a game-changer, not only for journalism but also on a broader scale. CEO of media group Ringier, Ladina Ladina Heimgartner, recently said that journalism has missed the boat in the technology revolution, and as a result has been left behind by cross-border platforms; therefore, journalism should take advantage of the opportunity to ride the wave of the AI revolution. However, Vietnamese press agencies are facing many challenges, from the lack of legal corridors to core technology to enter this playing field.
From the above issues, experts will provide appropriate solutions so that small and medium-sized newsrooms can choose and find the right direction for themselves, in order to keep up with the trends of world journalism. The Central Propaganda Department, the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Vietnam Journalists Association have been promoting programs, plans, and coordinating with international agencies and organizations such as WAN-IFRA and Google to support Vietnamese press agencies.
Session 5: "Diversifying revenue sources for press agencies".
Session 5: " Diversifying revenue sources for press agencies" moderated by journalist Le Trong Minh, Editor-in-Chief of Investment Newspaper. Discussing some main conclusions. Firstly, press revenue sources are posing many challenges for press agencies today. Because if they only rely on and depend heavily on advertising, press agencies will always face the risk of declining revenue, in the context that many ways to find customers no longer have to go through press agencies.
In addition, businesses have been looking for other effective ways to promote their products and sell their products. In addition, news sites and social networking sites intentionally take selective content from press agencies, which also attracts advertising revenue, making the economic pie for press agencies increasingly smaller.
Second, newsrooms are trying to diversify their readership by reaching out to more social media platforms. This includes trying to diversify their readership channels, because only with readers can there be revenue.
Finally, news agencies have made new moves as most of their current revenue sources have shifted to digital platforms. This shift comes from investing heavily in technology, changing the mindset and journalism habits of reporters and editors.
Investigative journalism requires knowledge, a pure heart and a spirit of commitment.
Session 6: "Reportage, investigative reporting and the journey to do useful things" attracted a lot of attention from the press, the public and students studying journalism.
Session 6 : " Reportage, investigative reportage and the journey to do useful things" hosted by Investigative Journalist Do Doan Hoang, Dan Viet Electronic Newspaper.
The speakers agreed that reporting and investigative reporting often require thorough research and in-depth exploration of a specific issue. Journalists must access sources, investigate, interview and create high-quality and detailed content to provide reliable and accurate information to the public. There are hard-won lessons behind the writing. Therefore, to do investigative journalism requires knowledge, a pure heart and a spirit of commitment.
To develop investigative journalism, there are the following four solutions and recommendations: First, continue to have programs, curriculum, and staff to train investigative reporters right from when they are still in university.
Journalist Le Quoc Minh attended discussion session number 6.
Second, at press agencies, especially large press agencies, depending on conditions, restore groups/teams/departments specializing in the investigative genre. On the issues; interfaces; and programs of press agencies, columns, sections, and programs with names associated with the genre should be maintained to "keep the fire" for the genre and retain readers who love this genre while attracting and developing new groups of readers.
Third, there should be appropriate policies and mechanisms on working conditions and income to encourage writers in this field to work with peace of mind, have a good income, and have security when facing risks and incidents. It is necessary to establish a "Risk Prevention Fund". Press agencies should prioritize investment in media technology to support journalistic works that are not only of high quality but also attractive in form and reach readers as quickly as possible.
Fourth, the Vietnam Journalists Association and the Ministry of Information and Communications need to study mechanisms and policies; make recommendations to consider investigative journalists as people performing public duties.
Continue to create and share authentic and humane information in the age of AI
Session 7: Television's competitiveness in the AI era, moderated by Journalist, Dr. Ta Bich Loan, Head of Entertainment Program Production Department, Vietnam Television.
Session 7 : "Competitiveness of television in the AI era" moderated by Journalist, Dr. Ta Bich Loan, Head of Entertainment Program Production Department, Vietnam Television.
Mr. Le Quoc Minh said that the explosion of artificial intelligence, especially artificial intelligence, is creating challenges, while also providing support to improve the competitiveness of the television industry in particular and journalism in general. What are the prospects? And what are the big questions that the television industry needs to solve in order to best serve viewers, satisfy audience needs and bring high profits to the television press unit?
With 4 presentations, discussion sessions and video presentations, the conference came to the following conclusions: Generative artificial intelligence technology is revolutionary in creating vivid images and content. At the same time, it is also a tool to understand and serve the public in the best way.
Master Nguyen Van Khanh - Head of the group restoring 10,000 photos of martyrs using AI technology, gave a speech at the discussion session.
Artificial intelligence will liberate labor and dramatically increase labor productivity in television production. This will help the television industry to promote its strengths.
Besides, the risks that artificial intelligence brings are also huge challenges in the process of producing television programs.
Artificial intelligence can create content that is similar to copyrighted content. This leads to intellectual property infringement. When the original information is inaccurate, misleading; or the data is incomplete, incorrect; or even fake, creative AI models cannot transparently verify objective facts.
Inequality, bias, and reflecting information that lacks humanity… are also risks that artificial intelligence can bring to television if we rely too much on this technology.
It is undeniable that artificial intelligence is creating and will create positive effects in the process of producing television programs. However, the role of human intelligence in the products created by artificial intelligence needs to be promoted and highly focused. At the same time, to improve the competitiveness of television in the AI era, we need to continue to create and share information that is authentic and has humanistic values. That is the data that contributes to Vietnam's large data warehouse. From there, artificial intelligence in Vietnam will have great opportunities to develop, and the value of television's competitiveness will also increase. Artificial intelligence will give wings to creativity for those working in television.
