The land of mandarins in Bac Giang, surrounded and converging by three rivers (Thuong, Cau, Luc Nam), the hometown of Doctor Than Nhan Trung with the famous saying: "Talents are the vital energy of the nation", has cultivated talents, bringing glorious laurel wreaths to the country.
"Village" school wins gold medal
Within two years, three "golden boys" Giap Vu Son Ha, Than The Cong, and Truong Phi Hung contributed to Vietnam's medal tally in the world intellectual arena with eight medals, including four gold medals, two silver medals, and two bronze medals.
On the "map" of schools that train excellent international students, specialized high schools in mountainous provinces like Bac Giang can be classified as "village" schools because it is difficult to compare achievements with traditional schools like Natural Science Specialized School, Hanoi National University of Education Specialized School, Hanoi Amsterdam Specialized School, or provinces with long traditions...
However, now, Bac Giang High School for the Gifted has become a phenomenon in the country's education, rising to the top of the list of schools with the most international and regional medals nationwide (both quantity and quality). If counting only gold medals, Bac Giang won 4 out of 9 medals of Vietnam.
Meritorious Teacher Nguyen Van Doa, who accompanied Cong and Hung for three years at Bac Giang High School for the Gifted and in international and regional exams, commented: "Cong and Hung, in addition to being intelligent, are also very diligent, hard-working, and have the ability to withstand high levels of study intensity, strong will, and courage."
There is no glory that is paved with roses. It is hard work, passion; along with the care of the family; the guidance of enthusiastic teachers and a healthy pedagogical environment for students to shine. "When the exam results were announced, when the name of Vietnam was called, when the red flag with yellow star of Vietnam flew in the most solemn position, in front of teachers and international friends, we were truly moved and proud" - Than The Cong confided.
Teacher Tran Duy Phuong, Principal of Bac Giang High School for the Gifted, said that the school's students won 15 Olympic medals of all kinds, including eight international and seven regional medals. In 2024 alone, with five medals (four gold, one bronze), the school broke its own record and set an unprecedented feat, leaving its mark on the international arena.
In the collection of international medals that Truong Phi Hung and Than The Cong brought back, we cannot fail to mention the contribution of a former student of Bac Giang High School for the Gifted, Trinh Duy Hieu. Hieu won a gold medal, a silver medal at the Asian Physics Olympiad, and two silver medals at the International Olympiad in 2018 and 2019.
In the reports of Bac Giang High School for the Gifted, from the time Cong and Hung won the Asian and international Olympic prizes, Trinh Duy Hieu was mentioned. Hieu is a fourth-year international student majoring in semiconductors at the National University of Singapore (NUS). With his experience participating in international and regional Olympic competitions, Hieu has inspired his juniors, including Cong and Hung, with an endless passion and inspiration for Physics.
Whenever he has free time, Hieu flies from Singapore to teach the two children; during the week, teachers and students make appointments to study online. Wherever Cong and Hung compete, no matter how busy he is, Hieu tries to be there to support and inspire them; selflessly, enthusiastically and cherishingly like real brothers.
"That is the responsibility, the previous generation leads the next generation. In the past, teachers devoted a lot of effort to guiding and supporting us, now we come back, spread and give to you, so that the underground stream of knowledge can flow forever, not only to Cong, Hung and Ha but also to others," Trinh Duy Hieu confided.
Detect the source early
The way Bac Giang does education is like planting trees, starting from the roots. Bac Giang has proactively sought, planted and nurtured excellent students from an early age; meticulously and thoughtfully taking care of trees so that those "trees" can grow sustainably, bringing about bumper harvests and bearing fruit.
Discussing this issue, Mr. Bach Dang Khoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training, shared: We require the province's key secondary schools and general schools to be responsible for discovering and nurturing students with special qualities and talents, not leaving out outstanding students. In this way, we select students who are talented in the subjects they like, so most of them can develop their strengths in the upper grades. This approach has given opportunities to all students.
For many years, the education and training sector of Bac Giang has determined to improve the quality of comprehensive education, while focusing on developing key education in a practical and effective direction; including drastic changes in the strategy of nurturing excellent students.
The project "Improving the quality of training excellent students in Bac Giang province for the period 2020-2025, with a vision to 2030" issued by the Provincial People's Committee on September 27, 2022, identifies a specific criterion for teachers, which is: Every year, each specialized subject group develops at least two topics to train core teachers for high-quality key secondary schools. To achieve this goal, the education sector has been very cautious, implementing it many years ago, achieving effectiveness and clear changes in the quality of key education, creating a flow of knowledge throughout schools and throughout the sector.
Bac Giang has proposed breakthrough and strategic policies to remove "bottlenecks" and difficulties for education, especially key education. One of those policies is Resolution No. 39 dated July 14, 2023 of the Provincial People's Council stipulating a number of support policies for students of Bac Giang High School for the Gifted; teachers, training experts and students participating in the provincial and national excellent student selection teams, regional and international Olympics.
The resolution "opens the way" for schools to increase the number of sessions inviting experts to lecture for teams, both national, international and regional competitions. This not only helps to raise the level of students in the teams but also directly solves the problem of "If you want good students, you need good teachers".
Standing Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Giang province Mai Son emphasized: "In recent times, Bac Giang has always focused on investing in comprehensive education development; proposing many solutions and policies to prioritize key education. The achievements have affirmed that the province's policies and investments are in the right direction and effective, contributing to the overall achievements of the country's education and contributing to enhancing the position and prestige of Vietnamese education in the international arena.
