The Australian Government has announced that it will provide Vietnam with an initial aid package of AUD 3 million, including humanitarian assistance efforts, emergency relief supplies and other essential services to respond to the damage caused by Super Typhoon Yagi.

Australia delivered the first consignment of emergency relief supplies to Hanoi on 11 September. Australia’s contribution will complement ongoing relief efforts by the Government of Vietnam and the international community, including through our humanitarian partnerships with Australian NGOs.

Typhoon Yagi was the strongest storm to hit northern Vietnam in more than three decades. Continuous heavy rainfall in mountainous areas caused severe flooding and landslides, resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life.

“We are here to help Vietnam in any way we can,” said Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Andrew Goledzinowski. “We are pleased that we have been able to quickly mobilize support to the worst-affected areas and hope this will alleviate some of the immediate pressures on families and communities. We know there is a long way to go and we stand with Vietnam at this difficult time.”

Australia’s support will include services provided through the Australian Humanitarian Partnership, in partnership with local organisations targeting the most affected communities and vulnerable populations. We will ensure women, children and people with disabilities have access to life-saving assistance. Support supplies include essential household items such as shelter and hygiene kits.

Australia sends its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Vietnam for the loss of life caused by the natural disasters. We express our deepest sympathies to the families of those who have lost loved ones or are missing. Australia appreciates the effective leadership of the Government of Vietnam in coordinating relief and emergency response activities in the affected areas. At the same time, we stand ready to support Vietnam in the process of overcoming the consequences and rebuilding. affected areas and stand ready to support Vietnam in the process of recovery and reconstruction, Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowaski affirmed.
