According to a report from Apple Developer , Apple revealed that iOS 17 currently has an adoption rate of 77%, lower than the adoption rate of iOS 16 during the same period, which reached 81% as of June 2023. Apple also pointed out that on iPhones introduced in the past 4 years, iOS 17 has an adoption rate of 86%. This figure is still lower than iOS 16, which had an adoption rate of 90% during the same period.

Essentially, these metrics are useful for developers, especially because of the compatibility their apps need to support. For users, it's a way for them to determine how well iOS 17 is being accepted, so they can decide whether or not to trust updating to that version.
For iPadOS 17, the adoption rate for iPads is 68%, compared to 86% for iPads released in the last four years. Notably, the adoption rate for iPads running iPadOS 16 is 15%, meaning that some iPad models that are no longer supported for updating to the latest version are still in daily use.
It will be important to see how iOS 18’s user adoption figures pan out once it’s publicly released, especially since it’s compatible with every iPhone model that supports iOS 17. The drawback many iPhone users will face when installing iOS 18 is that only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will receive Apple Intelligence, but other software improvements that could still appeal to users, such as the ability to customize the home screen, RCS messaging, etc., will make the new update more appealing.
According to experts, iOS 18 can not only break many of Apple's records in terms of reception, but it also indirectly helps the company promote users to upgrade to iPhone 15 Pro as well as the upcoming iPhone 16 generation to be able to fully enjoy the power of Apple Intelligence.
