Bloomberg on October 10 quoted senior officials familiar with the matter as saying that India will build two nuclear-powered submarines and buy 31 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) made by the United States. This weapons package costs about 350 billion rupees (4.2 billion USD).

The Cabinet Committee on Security took the decision on October 9, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity. For the first time, India will build nuclear-powered ships at its own shipyards. According to Reuters, the two new Indian submarines will be built at a shipbuilding center in the port of Visakhapatnam. It is unclear when the construction of the two ships is expected to be completed.

According to Reuters, the two submarines mentioned above will be different from the Arihant-class nuclear-powered submarines that India is currently building.

Nuclear-powered submarines are far superior to diesel-electric submarines. Nuclear-powered attack submarines are faster, quieter, and stay underwater longer than conventional diesel-powered submarines. As a result, they are often ranked among the most powerful naval assets in the world.

To date, only a handful of countries have built such submarines, including China, France, Russia, the UK and the US. Australia is currently working with the UK and the US to build similar vessels through the AUKUS trilateral security partnership.

The acquisition of modern equipment will not only help India boost its naval capabilities and improve its domestic weapons production capacity, but also enhance its ability to monitor and control vast maritime areas in the Indian Ocean region.

In addition, the Indian cabinet has also given the green light to purchase 31 Predator UAVs from the US defense corporation General Atomics. This agreement was signed under the Foreign Military Sales contract between the two countries. According to India Today , this agreement is expected to be finalized in the coming days.

As per the contract, deliveries of the UAVs will begin within four years from the date of signing of the agreement. Of the 31 drones, the Indian Navy will receive 15, while the Army and Air Force will each receive eight.
