Mr. Phung Duc Tien - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development said that in 2024, the agricultural sector will face many major challenges from climate change, natural disasters and market fluctuations. However, with the strong direction of the Party and Government, and the efforts of all levels, sectors, farmers and businesses, the agricultural sector has achieved remarkable achievements.
Despite facing drought, storms, saltwater intrusion and negative impacts from storm No. 3, the agricultural sector still ensured national food security, while boosting agricultural exports, setting many new records. This affirms the important role of agriculture in promoting the country's economy.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2024, the total production value (GO) of the entire industry will reach an estimated growth rate of 3.3%, the forest coverage rate will reach 42.02%; the rate of communes meeting new rural standards will reach 78.7%; the rate of rural households using clean water meeting standards will reach 58%.
Total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products reached a record high of 62.5 billion USD, up 18.7% compared to 2023; trade surplus continued to reach a new record of 17.9 billion USD, up 46.8%.
Despite challenges from extreme weather and unexpected events, the industry has proactively adapted and achieved growth targets, said Mr. Phung Duc Tien.
The structure of agricultural production continues to improve, moving towards products with high added value and competitiveness in the market. The productivity and output of many crops and livestock have increased compared to the previous year. In particular, the application of scientific and technological advances, mechanization and modern agricultural models have contributed to improving productivity and product quality.
Despite being severely affected by storms and floods, the industry has quickly overcome the consequences, supporting people to stabilize their lives and restore production. At the same time, the State's support policies have created favorable conditions for farmers to change production structure, increase product value and expand markets.
The results achieved show a positive shift in farmers’ production thinking, towards a modern, sustainable and efficient agriculture. The strengthening of the link between production and consumption, along with the development of agricultural enterprises and cooperatives, has contributed to enhancing the position of Vietnam’s agricultural products in the international market.
Towards high value agriculture
In 2025, the agricultural sector will focus all resources to make a breakthrough and successfully complete the goals set out in the Resolution of the 13th National Congress and Resolution of the 5th Central Committee (term XIII). The focus is on a strong shift from agricultural production to agricultural economy, building green and sustainable agriculture.
In the coming time, according to Mr. Tien, the agricultural sector will focus on removing difficulties, maximizing opportunities from free trade agreements, boosting exports, and increasing added value for products. At the same time, we will continue to build new rural areas and improve people's lives.
Some specific targets include GDP growth reaching 3.3 - 3.4%; agricultural exports reaching 64 - 65 billion USD, forest coverage remaining stable at 42.02% and 60% of rural households having access to clean water.
To achieve the set goals, the entire agricultural sector will focus on synchronously implementing key tasks such as continuing to restructure the sector, improving productivity, product quality and production and business efficiency. Promoting innovation, applying high technology and clean technology to production, in order to increase the added value of agricultural products.
Expanding the domestic and international agricultural product consumption market. Building and perfecting the value chain of agricultural products, closely connecting with the modern logistics system.
The agricultural sector innovates production organization by developing forms of cooperation, linking production and consumption along the value chain, creating effective and sustainable production models.
Invest in improving the quality of agricultural human resources, training modern skills to meet the requirements of high-tech agriculture.
According to Mr. Phung Duc Tien, the agricultural sector continues to effectively implement the National Target Program on New Rural Development, associated with sustainable rural socio-economic development, cultural preservation and improving people's lives.
Invest in building and completing agricultural and rural infrastructure systems, especially irrigation systems, to improve the ability to respond to climate change and minimize natural disaster risks.
