Only sold for 2 hours, late comers will be sold out

We stopped by Mrs. Lieu's bread cart on Hau Giang Street around 7:30. Mrs. Lieu quickly cut open the bread and asked us, "What do you want to eat?". On the small cart, she placed a carrying pole, displaying meat, pork skin, ham, meatballs, cucumbers, pickles... very eye-catching. It is known that she used to be famous for her bread cart, but over time, when her health did not allow it, she invested in a cart.

We bought a 15,000 VND sandwich filled with meat, pork sausage, pate, butter, vegetables and pickles. The bread crust was crispy and the meat was well marinated. One sandwich was enough for breakfast.

Mrs. Lieu has been selling bread for over 60 years.

After standing and chatting for nearly an hour, we noticed that the customers were mainly elderly people, workers, students, etc. One wave of customers after another kept the owner from resting for a minute.

Ms. Lieu said that people always affectionately call her "Mama Lieu" or "Grandma". Perhaps because she has been selling for decades, people are familiar with the taste of her bread, so every morning when she pushes her cart out, it is always crowded with customers. Thanks to her extensive experience, she makes bread very quickly so customers do not have to wait long.

The bread costs 15,000 VND.

Recently, the 38-year-old son helped her serve customers and pay the bill. The mother and son were very friendly and enthusiastic. Whatever the customers wanted to eat, or add or subtract, Mrs. Lieu and her son quickly fulfilled their requests.

Mr. Tran Van Khai (52 years old, District 6) stopped by to buy bread and said: "I am her regular customer. I have been eating here for more than ten years. Now I am used to the taste of Mrs. Lieu's bread, I rarely eat bread elsewhere. The best thing here is the meat. The meat is fresh, not smelly, soft, and has a very unique flavor. Especially, the owner is always cheerful and enthusiastic."

Quantity makes profit, never increase price

Confiding to the reporter, Ms. Lieu said that when she was 9 years old, she followed her mother to sell bread to make a living. Later, her mother was no longer able to work, so she took over her mother's business. When she first opened her shop, she did not stay in one place and went around District 6. Later, she settled on this area of Hau Giang Street and also had a large number of "regular" customers.

Ms. Le Thi Hoa (48 years old, District 6) is a regular customer and shared: "I have been eating Ms. Lieu's bread since I was a child, probably for 40 years. Every morning I stop by to eat, because there are many customers, I usually come early. The bread here is delicious, the flavor is not mixed with other shops".

Mrs. Lieu ensures fresh ingredients every day.

A loaf of bread at Mrs. Lieu's stall costs from 15,000 VND to 35,000 VND. Every day she sells more than 200 loaves. For workers and people in difficult circumstances, she charges the lowest price. "I sell to anyone who buys for 5,000 VND. People are suffering and have no money to eat, so I feel sorry for them. I sell cheap to help them have something to eat, and if anyone is suffering too much, I give it away. Like me, sometimes when things don't sell well, I don't have money to eat at noon," Mrs. Lieu confided while selling.

Mrs. Lieu's bread has not increased in price for 60 years.

The reason she chose to sell at this price is because she wants to feed the working class. According to her, the appeal of bread is not only in the price but also in the taste, fresh ingredients, suitable for most diners.

Currently, while the prices of many raw materials are increasing, Ms. Lieu still has no intention of increasing the selling price. She said that this price is suitable for her and her customers. She has enough profit to maintain, and customers have a full breakfast. This is what helps her find joy in her work.
