10 years ago, in February 2014, the 110kV underground power line across the sea from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc was put into operation. This was also a memorable moment for Phu Quoc residents, because for the first time the pearl island officially used electricity from the national grid.
Underground cable brings national grid power to Phu Quoc island in February 2014
Reduce electricity prices on the island by nearly 50%
The representative of the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSC) said that the 110kV Ha Tien - Phu Quoc submarine cable project aims to ensure a stable power supply for Phu Quoc island from the national power system, with a transmission capacity of up to 131 MVA; meeting the requirements of socio-economic development and enhancing competitiveness, making Phu Quoc an important economic zone, a high-quality tourist area of the country, region and the world, contributing to protecting and improving the environment for the island city.
The main project item is a 57.33km long 110kV submarine cable, with a structure of 1 cable with 3 cores of 630 mm2. This is also the longest submarine cable in Southeast Asia, with a total investment of 2,336 billion VND. The starting point of the submarine cable is from Thuan Yen commune, Ha Tien city and the end point is at Ham Ninh commune, Phu Quoc city.
The longest 220kV transmission line in Southeast Asia across the sea from Kien Binh to Phu Quoc will be put into operation in October 2022.
It can be said that the project has helped the people and businesses of Phu Quoc Island "change their lives" over the past 10 years, thanks to a safe and stable source of electricity. In particular, it has helped bring in an additional income value of over 200 billion VND due to a sharp decrease in electricity prices, from an average of 5,060 VND/kWh, down to nearly 50%, equivalent to the average electricity price on the mainland.
Help the island's smokeless industry develop
Since the memorable milestone of "electricity to the island" in February 2014, over the past 10 years, Phu Quoc has undergone strong changes and transformations. The smokeless industry here has developed spectacularly, and has been continuously voted and honored by many of the world's leading prestigious media channels as one of the 10 most pristine and quiet beaches in the world; one of the 6 most beautiful beaches on the planet... In particular, in September 2023, Phu Quoc was honored as a "tropical paradise".
Southern Power Corporation also said that after the 110kV Ha Tien - Phu Quoc underground cable line came into operation, Phu Quoc's electricity load increased continuously, with an average rate of over 45%/year. This is a very high growth rate in electricity use compared to many other localities. To meet the rapidly increasing electricity load demand of Phu Quoc, in 2018, EVNSPC increased the capacity of Phu Quoc 110kV substation from 2x40MVA to 2x63MVA, and continued to invest in many power projects on the island, especially the construction of the longest 220kV sea-going line in Southeast Asia from the mainland to Phu Quoc island.
Foreign experts join the Ha Tien - Phu Quoc submarine cable project
EVNSPC forecasts that the growth rate of commercial electricity in Phu Quoc in the period of 2024 - 2030 will continue to be hot due to a series of hotel and resort investment projects being urgently implemented and completed. In the period of 2023 - 2025, the average annual increase will be 17%/year. The total registered load capacity for electricity use by 2025 in Phu Quoc will reach 502.9MVA. These are mostly large resort tourism projects on Phu Quoc Island, which are being accelerated by investors.
To ensure the ability to supply electricity to Phu Quoc, EVNSPC has implemented a series of important projects, including the 220kV Kien Binh - Phu Quoc transmission line project, with a total investment of up to VND 2,212 billion.
Operating 110kV station in Phu Quoc to supply electricity to the pearl island
After the energization of the 220kV Kien Binh - Phu Quoc sea-crossing line and the 110kV Phu Quoc - South Phu Quoc line (October 2022), the prolonged overload situation on the Phu Quoc island distribution grid has been basically resolved. In addition, the risk of overloading the 110kV Ha Tien - Phu Quoc underground cable no longer exists, and the reliability of power supply has been improved.
