(PLVN) - 2024 will be a memorable year for the tuna industry, when export turnover reaches nearly 1 billion USD, despite many fluctuations in the international market. However, to maintain growth momentum and maximize opportunities in 2025, the tuna industry needs to address many challenges and promote synchronous cooperation between fishermen, businesses and management agencies.

According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, Vietnam's tuna exports in December 2024 reached nearly 86 million USD, an increase of 17% over the same period in 2023. Accumulated for the whole year of 2024, tuna export turnover reached 989 million USD, an increase of 17% over 2023.

Over the past year, Vietnam's tuna exports have all increased compared to the same period last year. Notably, exports of other processed tuna products, after a continuous decline in the first months of the year, have grown continuously in the last months of the year. The increase was 24% over the same period last year, accounting for 17% of total export turnover. In contrast, exports of canned tuna products tended to decrease in the second half of the year. Cumulatively for the whole year of 2024, canned tuna exports increased by 17%.

Vietnam's frozen tuna meat/loin products still account for the highest proportion. Exports of this product group in 2024 have increased again and tend to increase rapidly in the last months of the year.

In the markets, by the end of 2024, tuna exports to major markets will remain higher than in 2023. However, the export growth rate tends to be unstable in the second half of the year. Notably, in December, tuna exports to the EU increased slightly again.

Along with the EU, tuna exports to Canada, after a period of decline, have also accelerated again in the last two months of the year. In December 2024 alone, tuna exports to Canada increased by 40% compared to the same period in 2023.

Meanwhile, exports to Japan have been falling continuously in the last two months of the year. In December 2024, exports to this market decreased by 27%. Exports to Israel are also falling this December with a decrease of 28% compared to the same period.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnam’s tuna industry will continue to maintain its growth momentum in 2025 thanks to the continued increase in consumption demand for its products. In addition, innovation in tariff policies in international markets, especially in the US, will be a lever for exports.

VASEP believes that during Donald Trump’s second term as president, Vietnam will continue to benefit from high tariffs on imported goods from China. At the same time, the resumption of tariff incentives under trade agreements in the first months is a favorable opportunity for businesses to increase exports to many markets.

However, the tuna industry is still facing many problems that need to be resolved to promote more sustainable development.

For fishermen, it is necessary to create incentives for them to strictly comply with legal regulations, including IUU, while increasing marine exploitation, reinvesting and going offshore. Some proposed solutions include: building auction markets to help fishermen sell products at the highest prices and centralizing traceability data; reviewing and amending regulations on fishing areas (shore, inshore, offshore); adjusting regulations on minimum catch sizes for some fish species, especially skipjack tuna, yellowfin tuna and migratory species. In addition, it is necessary to develop a strategy to build large corporations or enterprises in the field of marine exploitation to cooperate with coastal countries, expand the scope of operations, and at the same time create sustainable raw materials and new incentives for fishermen.

On the business side, according to VASEP, improving the business environment and simplifying administrative procedures is essential. Solutions include: continuing to review and improve the process of issuing S/C and C/C certificates to address current shortcomings; facilitating businesses in registering and choosing sampling methods for verification (based on production or export shipments), allowing businesses to flexibly choose when submitting production and export plans depending on the scale of the factory.

VASEP forecasts that with synchronous coordination between management agencies, businesses and fishermen, Vietnam's tuna exports in 2025 can achieve stronger growth.
