"The level in the Thai League is not much better than in Vietnam," midfielder Luong Xuan Truong said in his podcast on YouTube. The player born in 1995 recalled his time playing abroad for clubs Incheon United, Gangwon (South Korea) and Buriram United (Thailand).
Xuan Truong played for Buriram United - the leading team of Thai League in early 2019 but only played 6 matches, including 4 starting matches. After half a season without competing for a regular playing position, he returned to Vietnam.
Luong Xuan Truong used to play for 3 foreign clubs.
"Thailand and Vietnam's football have many similarities. However, Thai players have something that I think is better than Vietnamese players, which is their bravery and a very calm and dignified playing style," Xuan Truong commented.
He added about the difference in terms of on-field expertise between Thai football and Vietnam: "The clubs also create a good image, with many activities to help the team become more professional and closer to the audience. Personally, I always think that Thai football is still ahead of us, we don't know how far it is, but they are ahead. If we don't take any specific actions, the gap will grow wider and wider."
Before playing for Buriram United, Xuan Truong had been abroad for 2 years. He played a total of 6 matches in the K.League (4 matches for Incheon United, 2 matches for Gangwon). Injuries and physical problems caused Xuan Truong many difficulties. The midfielder born in 1995 admitted that the decision to move to Gangwon was the wrong choice.
"It was very rare that I had the opportunity to officially play in Incheon when coach Lee Ki-hyung saw my ability to adapt to his tactics. If I had decided to stay with Incheon for the next season, I believe that my time in the K.League could have been sweeter. However, it is true that you have to go through wrong choices to realize where you went wrong," said Xuan Truong.
Although he has not been successful himself, the midfielder currently playing for Hai Phong Club still believes that going abroad will bring many career benefits to Vietnamese players.
"The truth is that I have not had success when playing football abroad, but for me, those are huge steps forward in my career. This is also my decision and choice, so no matter what the result is, I am the one who accepts it. I have nothing to regret because the more I go and the more I experience, the more I learn. I know where my limits are, from there I also have a better view of different football backgrounds.
Every choice has two sides and its price. Trying to learn carefully before making a decision is the right thing to do. Although not really successful, those experiences also taught me a lot about the big world out there," Xuan Truong shared.
