NDO - Since 1999, nearly 90 patents and useful solutions for stem cell technology research in the medical field have been registered in Vietnam. Of these, 19 applications belong to research institutes, universities, state management agencies and domestic enterprises.

On November 21, the Center for Science and Technology Information and Statistics (Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City) organized a workshop on "Trends in stem cell technology research serving the medical field".

In his opening speech, Master Nguyen Duc Tuan, Director of the Center for Information and Statistics on Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the journey of stem cell therapy in the world has developed over the years, becoming a new therapeutic agent of regenerative medicine. From 2015 to present, stem cell technology continues to be researched and developed for application in the treatment of diseases.

Referring to the trend of stem cell technology research serving the medical field based on international patent data, Master Le Tran Duy Sang, Center for Information and Statistics on Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City, said that from 1981 to October 2024, the world recorded about 25,000 patent applications for stem cell technology in the medical field. Research began to explode from 2015, with more than 1,000 patents each year, mainly concentrated in: China, the US, Korea and Japan.

In Vietnam, from 1999 to present, there have been 87 inventions and utility solutions registered. Of these, 19 applications belong to research institutes, universities, state management agencies and domestic enterprises.

Talking about major breakthroughs in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, Associate Professor, Dr. Huynh Nghia, Head of Pediatric Hematology Department 2, Ho Chi Minh City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital, said that since the early days, hematopoietic stem cells have become a treatment method to cure life-threatening cancer, genetic and immune diseases.

Hematopoietic stem cells have several advantages such as: very special self-renewal properties, the ability to settle in “Niche” areas in the bone marrow after intravenous injection and the ability to be cryopreserved. HSCT (allogeneic blood stem cell transplantation) is recognized as a cellular immunotherapy and minimizes post-transplant toxicity.

In addition to significant breakthroughs in the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, Dr. Huynh Nghia also emphasized the future challenges when applying this method to clinical applications. In particular, the storage and development of cells after being separated outside is still a difficult problem, requiring optimal solutions to ensure the effectiveness of the stem cell transplantation process.

Associate Professor, Dr. Huynh Nghia, Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital spoke at the conference.

Also at the workshop, Dr. Pham Le Buu Truc, Ho Chi Minh City Biotechnology Center analyzed clinical research applying stem cell therapy in the treatment of heart disease in the world. Thereby, he stated that clinical research applying stem cell therapy in the treatment of heart disease in the world is still limited, and very limited in Vietnam due to the complexity of the disease.

The workshop focused on discussing the trends in stem cell technology research for the medical field based on international patent data; major breakthroughs in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and future challenges in clinical implementation; research and application of stem cells in disease treatment...

The Organizing Committee hopes that through the workshop, it will create a bridge for researchers to have more opportunities to cooperate and deploy technological solutions into practice, and at the same time hope that there will be more inventions and research on stem cell technology applied and serving the healthcare sector of Vietnam in the near future.
