After 15 years of selling phones, home appliances and smart devices, Xiaomi officially entered the automobile industry in 2024 with the SU7 sedan. After only one year, Xiaomi's SU7 electric car surpassed Tesla Model 3 in sales in China since December 2024, marking a major turning point for the emerging brand in the electric vehicle sector.
Last February, Xiaomi continued to launch the SU7 Ultra sports version. According to Chairman Lu Weibing, the company plans to expand to the international market from 2027. To realize the goal of becoming a global electric vehicle brand, Xiaomi is actively recruiting talent from the "big guys" in the automobile industry, especially from Germany.

Xiaomi has attracted a number of experienced experts from BMW and Rolls-Royce to join its electric vehicle development team. Notably, Mr. Rudolf Dittrich, who worked at BMW for 15 years and participated in the Williams and Sauber F1 racing teams, has been invited to be the director of Xiaomi's research and development (R&D) center in Europe. The specific location of this center has not been disclosed, but information on LinkedIn shows that Xiaomi is stepping up recruitment in Munich, Germany - the cradle of the European auto industry.
In addition to Mr. Dittrich, Mr. Dusan Sarac, who worked at BMW and Rolls-Royce, and Mr. Jannis Hellwig, a high-performance product development engineer, have also joined Xiaomi. The company also plans to recruit at least five leaders from BMW to strengthen its R&D team. Furthermore, Xiaomi is looking for personnel to fill design and dynamic engineering positions in Munich.
This year, Xiaomi will continue to launch the YU7 electric SUV, directly competing with the Tesla Model Y - the car line that is dominating the global electric SUV segment.

In addition, the company also aims to sell 350,000 electric vehicles in China in 2025. If successful, this number will exceed the total electric vehicle sales in 2024 of Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche combined. This is an ambitious plan, especially when the company only started producing the SU7 a year ago. However, with the sales of 200,000 units achieved, along with the launch of the SU7 Ultra, Xiaomi has a good chance of achieving this goal.
