At 4am on June 19, Ms. Cat Diem was at Thuc Hanh Primary School, District 3, waiting to buy the application form for her child to enter first grade.
On June 19, the Practical Primary School of Saigon University released application documents for first grade admission. The start time was 7:30 a.m., but many parents lined up along the school gate from early morning.
Ms. Cat Diem, District 3, said she arrived at the school at 4am, it was still dark but there were already more than 20 parents lining up. "The first person to arrive arrived at 2am," Ms. Diem said. Ms. Diem was excited to get number 28, in the safe group to register because this year the school only enrolls 175 students.
"I am a civil servant and have priority admission to the school, but I am still worried that the applications will sell out early, so I have to line up at midnight to be sure," Ms. Diem shared.

Arriving at the school gate at 4:45, Ms. Bich Ngoc, District 8, was ranked 75th. According to Ms. Ngoc, the school's organization was very good, the security guard was present to distribute queue numbers, and to record the names of parents and students from the beginning, so there was no jostling or pushing. At 7:30, the school called groups of 10 people in turn in order to receive the documents. Each set cost 50,000 VND.
"The school has full facilities, a large yard, new teaching methods, and little pressure, so I want my child to study there. There is no problem lining up early," said Ms. Ngoc.
Practice Primary School announced that it will accept students in order of priority, respectively: Children of officials and employees at Saigon University; Children of individuals and units that have cooperated and contributed to the development of the school; Children whose father or mother is an official, civil servant, or state employee; then the remaining group of preschool children. The admission results will be announced by the school on July 15.

The school representative said that due to the physical conditions, only 175 first graders will be admitted. This person said that unlike sixth grade admissions, which can be based on scores, foreign language proficiency, or ability tests, first grade admissions can only be based on the school's priority groups and applications will be issued in order. The school is planning to repair the physical facilities to increase enrollment in the coming years.
The Practice Primary School, affiliated with Saigon University, was established in 2019. This is one of 16 primary schools in the city implementing the advanced international school model. Schools following this model must maintain a class size of no more than 35 students, study two sessions per day, all teachers must be able to communicate in English, and have basic IT skills. In terms of output, at least 50% of students must have certificates, English and IT skills according to international standards. Tuition here is 1.5 million VND per month, other fees (boarding, shuttle bus) are subject to agreement.
