Building growing area codes for export markets

Việt NamViệt Nam02/07/2024

The growing area code (MSVT) is an identification code for a growing area to monitor and control production, control product quality, and trace the origin of crop products. The establishment and issuance of MSVT aims to provide agricultural products with quality, food safety (FS), and clear origin to serve domestic consumers and aim for export through official channels.

Building growing area codes for export markets Thanh Long of Ho Guom CNC Agriculture Company Limited (Ngoc Lac) has been granted MSVT.

Determining that the establishment of MSVT plays an important role in improving the quality and value of products in the domestic market as well as serving exports, Yen Phong Agricultural Service Cooperative, Yen Phong Commune (Yen Dinh) has built and developed 4 chili growing area codes in 4 fields: Quan Noi, Than Nong, Tam Tang, Dong Mieu with a total area of 30 hectares, 150 participating households. Mr. Nguyen Cong Quang, Director of Yen Phong Agricultural Service Cooperative, said: In order for chili plants to be eligible for MSVT, households must comply with safe production regulations according to VietGAP standards. At the same time, the Cooperative regularly sends technical staff to the fields to guide and supervise farmers in production and use of materials in accordance with regulations. After chili plants were granted MSVT, many businesses and agents came to buy chili. On average, each year the cooperative supplies about 600 tons of chili to the market, of which T9 Agricultural Products Import-Export Company Limited, located in Nhu Thanh district, purchases about 200 tons/crop. The rest are traders and agents purchasing chili right in the locality. With the purchase price of chili in the winter crop of 2023-2024 at 30,000 VND/kg, 1 hectare of chili after deducting costs will bring chili growers an income of over 200 million VND/year, higher than many other crops. Therefore, the cooperative is proposing to the commune government that in the coming winter crop, it will convert and replace some ineffective crops in Dong Cao (Thi Than village), an area of about 15 hectares, to grow chili. If the commune agrees to this proposal, the chili growing area will increase to 45 hectares.

Regarding the effectiveness of MSVT issuance in Yen Dinh district in the past time, Mr. Nguyen Dang Nguyen, Director of Yen Dinh District Agricultural Service Center, said that up to now, the district has been granted a license by the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) to certify 39 MSVT for chili pepper export with an area of 120 hectares, concentrated in 9/30 communes in the area. Of which, 24 codes are exported to the Chinese market, 15 codes are exported to the Malaysian market. The coding of growing areas not only meets the requirements of ensuring compliance with regulations on safe plant quarantine and food hygiene and safety of the importing country but also contributes to changing farming practices, raising farmers' awareness of production in a more responsible direction. Thereby, increasing the value of goods, bringing local agricultural products to the world market. Currently, 1 hectare of land for growing chili peppers yields 17-20 tons, with the purchase price of the enterprise being 30,000 VND/kg, after deducting costs, the profit is about 200 million VND/ha/year. In the coming time, to expand and develop MSVT chili for export, Yen Dinh district is closely coordinating with the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection to actively guide and support farmers and agricultural production cooperatives in the area to implement standards on cultivation conditions to be granted MSVT, in order to increase the value of agricultural products and increase income for people.

According to the Domestic Plant Quarantine Station, Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa), up to now, the province has had 79 MSVTs and 1 packaging facility granted codes, with an area of 661.92 hectares, mainly concentrated in districts such as Yen Dinh, Hau Loc, Tho Xuan, Ngoc Lac... Mr. Do Van Dung, Head of the Domestic Plant Quarantine Station, Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Thanh Hoa affirmed that the issuance of MSVTs is like a "passport" to help Thanh Hoa agricultural products have conditions to access markets of other countries, including demanding markets, thereby increasing the value of agricultural products and increasing income for farmers. In the coming time, the department will continue to propagate and guide organizations and individuals about the significance of establishing MSVTs. At the same time, guide technical measures, review and re-evaluate products with potential advantages of concentrated goods, remove obstacles to promote chain linkages and be granted MSVTs. At the same time, tighten the management of MSVT and agricultural product packaging facilities for export to ensure requirements on plant quarantine and food hygiene and safety.
