The 6th Asian U18 Athletics Championships gathered the continent's top young talents, providing a valuable opportunity for young Vietnamese athletes to compete. Athlete Mai Ngoc Anh (born in 2008) competed impressively in the women's high jump and won the Silver Medal with a result of 1m69, only 4cm behind the Gold Medalist Dong Jialing (China).

Head of the delegation Nguyen Duc Nguyen assessed that this was an expected result, because Mai Ngoc Anh is an athlete who is a key investment. She won the Gold Medal in this event at the 2024 Southeast Asian U18 Athletics Championship in Malaysia, with a record of 1m68.

Along with Mai Ngoc Anh, the Vietnamese youth athletics team also has two other potential faces, Luong Thi Khan and Le Thi Thao. Le Thi Thao is competing in the 400m hurdles qualifying round, while Luong Thi Khan is participating in the women's 3,000m event.

All three athletes won medals at the 2024 Southeast Asian Youth Championship, thereby affirming their prominent positions in the national U18 team.

According to the coaching staff, the athletes have been well prepared both physically and mentally, adapting well to the weather conditions in Saudi Arabia – where there is a large temperature difference between day and night. Competing in the evening also helps ensure the athletes’ physical condition.

This year's tournament is an important stepping stone in the long-term roadmap of Vietnamese youth athletics, preparing for major events such as the SEA Games, ASIAD and Olympics in the future.

In addition to the women's high jump, Vietnamese athletes also compete in many events including short, medium and long distance running; obstacle course; long jump, triple jump; and throwing and pushing events in the competition system for both men and women.

Mai Ngoc Anh's winning of the Continental Silver Medal is not only an encouraging personal achievement but also a positive signal showing that the quality of youth training in Vietnamese athletics is making steady progress, creating a foundation for the future.
