The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a global campaign called the "Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan" to prevent monkeypox (mpox) from spreading from person to person.
The plan is expected to run from September 2024 to February 2025, with a budget of US$135 million. By coordinating global, regional and national efforts, the plan aims to strengthen surveillance and strategic response, ensure equitable access to diagnostics and vaccines for all people around the world, reduce zoonotic transmission and strengthen community disease control capacity.
The vaccination plan targets those most at risk, such as close contacts and health workers, to break the chain of transmission. It also focuses on providing strategic direction and guidance, ensuring that vulnerable groups in affected areas have access to medical treatment.
Mpox is a viral disease that is spread through close contact and is usually mild but can be fatal. Previously, on August 14, WHO declared a global public health emergency due to the mpox outbreak in African countries.
Mpox is currently spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries with the endemic strain Clade 1 and a new variant called Clade 1b that is of global concern due to its ability to spread more easily through close contact.
