Round 4 of the English League Cup: Man City, Chelsea eliminated

Three strong teams in the Premier League, Man City, Chelsea and Aston Villa, were all eliminated in the fourth round of the English League Cup. Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle are the teams that won tickets to continue.

The eight teams in the 2024-25 EFL Cup quarter-finals all play in the Premier League.

Man City eliminated

Man City did not use their strongest lineup when facing Tottenham. In just the first 25 minutes, The Citizens received 2 goals after the efforts of Timo Werner and Pape Sarr.

In the 5th minute, Dejan Kulusevski quickly pulled the ball from a counter-attack on the right wing. He passed the ball conveniently to Werner who was waiting in the penalty area. The Tottenham striker shot the ball with one touch, defeating his compatriot goalkeeper Ortega from close range.

In the 25th minute, Pape Sarr swung his foot to finish from outside the penalty area. The ball went in a tricky direction, leaving goalkeeper Ortega unable to block it. This was the Senegal midfielder's third goal of the season for Tottenham.

Man City only managed to score 1 goal to reduce the score thanks to Matheus Nunes at the end of the first half. Despite playing hard in the second half, the defending English champions did not score any more goals and were officially eliminated by a 1-2 defeat to Tottenham.

Palmer not on the field, Chelsea plays weakly

Coach Enzo Maresca decided to leave Cole Palmer on the bench for the trip to Saint James Park. He did not even register Nicolas Jackson, the Blues' best striker this season.

Chelsea did not create much of a highlight in attack. In defense, Axel Disasi and Benoit Diashile played immaturely, making mistakes that directly led to the goal. In the 23rd minute, Badiashile passed the ball to Renato Veiga, causing the visitors to counterattack from a dangerous position. The ball reached Isak, and the Swedish striker easily defeated goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.

In the 26th minute, Joe Willock headed a harmless shot into the penalty area, but Axel Disasi accidentally touched the ball and sent it into the home net. Conceding 2 goals in just 3 minutes, Chelsea lost 0-2 and were officially eliminated.

In the remaining matches of the 4th round of the League Cup, strong teams such as Arsenal and Liverpool all won. The biggest surprise belonged to Aston Villa, when they lost 1-2 to Crystal Palace at home.
