According to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), cardamom is the second most expensive spice in the world, after saffron and vanilla. This fruit is also sold at a very expensive price, sometimes up to 90 USD for 1 kg, equivalent to more than 2.3 million VND. Notably, this fruit is abundant in Vietnam and has high export value.
Cardamom is a wild herb found in South America, Thailand, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam... In Vietnam, cardamom grows naturally and is mainly grown in cool climate areas such as Cao Bang and Lao Cai.

Nutmeg originated from the Maluku Islands (Indonesia) and is widely grown in tropical countries such as Cambodia, India and Malaysia. In our country, nutmeg trees are often popular in the southern provinces. The tree can be harvested after 7-8 years, and can be harvested twice a year in November-December and April-June.
According to statistics from the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in 2024, Vietnam exported 3,402 tons of cardamom - nutmeg with a turnover of 27.6 million USD, compared to 2023, the export volume decreased by 4.2% but the turnover increased by 1.0%. Nedspice, Olam and Tuan Minh are the 3 largest exporting enterprises with 1,868 tons, 766 tons and 240 tons respectively.
There are currently about 30 markets importing this product from Vietnam, of which the Netherlands, the US and the UK are the three largest export markets of this product group from Vietnam with market shares of 31%, 15% and 11.2% respectively.
In 2023, Vietnam exported 3,551 tons of cardamom and nutmeg with a total export turnover of 27.4 million USD. The Netherlands, China and the US were the three main importing countries with 923 tons, 756 tons and 484 tons respectively.
Vietnam is a country with a strong spice industry. Currently, our country has 500,000 hectares of spice crops, with about 400 enterprises and hundreds of thousands of small-scale farmers participating in the production and export of this product. It is expected that the total export turnover of Vietnam's spices by 2025 can reach about 2 billion USD, with an export volume of about 500,000 tons.
