At the reception, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh sincerely thanked Canada for inviting Vietnam to participate in the "Global Carbon Pricing Challenge" (GCPC) initiative and hoped that Canada, with its experience in implementing carbon pricing and developing carbon markets, would support Vietnam in this field, especially in developing human resources and experience in managing and operating carbon markets.
Minister Dang Quoc Khanh announced that the Prime Minister of Vietnam, the President of the European Commission and representatives of the Leaders of the International Partners Group announced the Plan to mobilize resources to implement JETP Vietnam at COP28 and hoped that Canada would actively support Vietnam in implementing the Plan.
Minister Dang Quoc Khanh hopes that Canada will support the effective implementation of JETP to ensure sustainable development, energy security and bring a prosperous and happy life to the people.
On this occasion, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh also asked Canada to support Vietnam in addressing plastic pollution on the basis of the Global Agreement on Plastic Pollution.
The Minister also stated that Vietnam is implementing many activities to reduce methane emissions according to its committed targets. In particular, Vietnam is cooperating with the World Bank to implement a project to develop 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice to both ensure food security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Minister Steven Guilbeault congratulated the launch of the JETP Resource Mobilization Plan in Vietnam. Canada is one of the JETP implementation partners in Vietnam and will be actively involved in the implementation process.
Canada has been implementing carbon pricing for four years and is ready to cooperate, share experiences and support Vietnam in this field, as well as develop the carbon market, said Minister Steven Guilbeault. At the same time, Canada also has a lot of experience in reducing methane emissions and will be ready to exchange information and experiences with Vietnam in implementation.
On this occasion, Minister Steven Guilbeault proposed signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to comprehensively implement cooperation activities with Vietnam in the fields of biodiversity conservation, environmental protection, climate change response, and plastic pollution resolution.
The two Ministers agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in 2024 and have an annual meeting mechanism to promote cooperation activities.
