Meeting between Thailand and representatives of 15 countries to deal with illegal immigration.

On January 31, Inspector General of the Thai National Police Thatchai Pitaneelaboot met with ambassadors and representatives from 15 countries, including some that often deal with illegal immigration such as Brazil, Tanzania, Russia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Laos, India, Morocco, and China.

Held at the Royal Thai Police (RTP) headquarters, the meeting aimed to discuss measures to prevent illegal cross-border movement and enhance international cooperation to address this threat.

The meeting was also attended by officials from the RTP, the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Cybercrime Investigation Bureau, the Immigration Bureau and the RTP's Diplomatic Service; along with representatives from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Thatchai, Inspector General of the Thai National Police, who is also the Director of the Anti-Human Trafficking Center and Director of the Cybercrime Prevention and Suppression Center of the RTP, said the purpose of the meeting was to connect countries whose citizens were tricked into working for call center scammers in neighboring countries, often transiting through Thailand, to enhance cooperation so that communication between countries becomes more effective, allowing for 24/7 coordination.

According to Mr. Thaichat, in case citizens of any country are found to have traveled to high-risk areas, such as the Mae Sot border district (bordering Myanmar) in Tak province in northern Thailand, whether by land or air, and without a clear travel route, border control officers will be asked to contact the respective embassy. This measure ensures direct communication between the embassy and the citizen to prevent them from falling victim to scams via the call center.

Foreign nationals entering Mae Sot will be subject to the same questioning process as international visitors arriving at the airport and will be required to provide clear details of their travel and travel plans.

The Thai national police chief said the embassies had expressed strong support for the plan. The meeting also discussed efforts to crack down on call center scams, which are not only prevalent in Thailand’s neighboring countries but are also a global problem, and reached consensus on cracking down on call center scams.
