The conference was attended by more than 500 delegates, including professors, doctors and medical staff from within and outside the country in the fields of urology, nephrology and advanced specialties such as robotic surgery, endoscopic surgery, urological plastic surgery, urinary tract infections, urinary tract cancer, kidney transplantation, andrology, urology/functional urology, etc.
Speaking at the conference, Prof. Dr. Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health, shared that Southeast Asian countries are in the world's "stone belt". The US National Library of Medicine shows that Southeast Asia has the highest rate of urinary stones in the world, with a rate of 5% -19.1%. In Vietnam alone, it was previously recorded that 2% -12% of the population had urinary stones, of which kidney stones accounted for 40%.
Therefore, the FAUA Scientific Conference 2023 is a valuable opportunity for experts and doctors in the country, the region and the world to meet, exchange and update new trends as well as medical advances, and apply modern technology in the diagnosis and treatment of urinary diseases. Professor Thuan highly appreciated the efforts of the Southeast Asian Urological Federation, the Vietnam Nephrology Association and the Ho Chi Minh City Nephrology Association, Tam Anh General Hospital and international organizations for providing a valuable opportunity to discuss, share knowledge, and seek specific solutions in strategies to prevent urinary diseases.
Professor Samuel Vincent G. Yrastorza - President of the Federation of Southeast Asian Urological Associations (FAUA) said that FAUA was established in 1993 to strengthen friendship, promote training, education and research together. It is a pleasure that after a period of interruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the FAUA Scientific Conference has returned. As for Vietnam, this is the second time hosting after 14 years.
Representing the host country to organize the conference, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Dinh Khanh - President of the Vietnam Urology and Nephrology Association, said that in recent years, the field of Urology in Vietnam has made great progress, developing advanced techniques on par with the region and the world. However, the work of medical examination and treatment, serving patients needs to strive a lot to meet the needs of the people, must learn from other countries in terms of service methods, approaches to new technology and techniques, etc.
The FAUA 2023 Scientific Conference is one of the most prestigious medical forums in the region and globally in the field of urology and English is used in 100% of the participating reports, discussion sessions and exchanges. The conference has more than 90 reports on various topics such as urological cancer, stones, minimally invasive techniques (endoscopy and robotics), andrology, kidney transplantation... In addition, there are very topical topics related to medical life, which are of interest to many people such as: urinary tract reconstruction, female urology/functional urology and urodynamics, interstitial cystitis and bladder pain syndrome.
The focus of the 2023 conference is the high-tech implementation part performed by leading experts, with demonstration surgeries performed within the framework of the conference. This is a great opportunity for Vietnamese urologists to interact with foreign reporters to exchange knowledge about pathology and treatment methods of neighboring countries, which have many similarities with Vietnam.
Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Le Chuyen - Director of the Center for Urology and Andrology, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, and Honorary President of the Vietnam Urology and Nephrology Association, a key member of this year's Organizing Committee, said: " Vietnam and Southeast Asian countries have many things in common, which is that the rate of population suffering from urinary - kidney - stone diseases is among the highest in the world. That is why the Vietnam and Southeast Asian Urology and Nephrology Association is the strongest specialty among medical specialties in the region. Even in the world, every year there are very large conferences on this specialty."
In Vietnam, prostate cancer ranks 11th with nearly 4,000 new cases and has the 13th highest mortality rate. Vietnamese people have an increase in urinary diseases due to many different causes, mainly due to lifestyle, habits of drinking little water, eating salty foods, urinary tract infections, metabolic diseases, lack of exercise...
The FAUA Conference takes place over 3 consecutive days (September 7 - 9, 2023) at Tam Anh Research Institute, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City (2B Pho Quang, Ward 2, Tan Binh District).
