In recent years, Vietnamese television dramas have shown signs of slowing down. However, family dramas are still being exploited by directors and screenwriters and have received sympathy from viewers. Notable works include "The Taste of Love", "Love for the Sunny Days", "Don't Make Me Angry", "My Family Is Suddenly Happy", "One Family"...

Most recently, "My Father, the One Who Stays" also attracted attention when it was remade from the famous Chinese work "In the Name of the Family". After officially airing on March 17, the film has always been at the top of the most watched program rankings nationwide, with a rating of over 5%, according to data from market research unit Kantar Media Vietnam. Along with that, the film's content also received a lot of feedback from the audience on social networks.

The plot is close, reflecting life

In fact, Vietnamese family films always attract audiences by exploiting familiar, easy-to-empathize stories. Along with that, the situations and dialogues are imbued with everyday life, making viewers feel like they can see themselves in them.

With "My Father, the One Who Stays" is a story revolving around the life of a family with 2 fathers Binh (Meritorious Artist Thai Son) and Chinh (Meritorious Artist Bui Nhu Lai) and 3 children, Nguyen (Tran Nghia), Viet (Thai Vu) and An (Ngoc Huyen). Their family may lack the figure of a mother and a wife, but the love between the 5 people is always full, even though they are not related by blood.

In the Vietnamese version, the screenwriter and director cleverly incorporated and inserted many Vietnamese elements, such as the "dirty skewer" snack, the national cultural imprint in the character Mr. Binh - when the couple both have a passion for singing Cheo... helping the film become more relatable.

In addition, the natural transformation of the actors for each character is also a point of attraction for the audience. In terms of acting, besides the duo of Meritorious Artist Thai Son - Bui Nhu Lai, the young cast also made an impression. In particular, the character An played by Ngoc Huyen convinced the audience with her innocence, playfulness, and optimism.

Similarly, "Our Family Suddenly Happy" brings together a familiar cast of actors such as People's Artist Bui Bai Binh, People's Artist Lan Huong, Meritorious Artist Kieu Anh, Quang Su, Lan Phuong, Doan Quoc Dam, Kha Ngan, Thanh Son, bringing a different perspective when portraying the life of a three-generation family.

In particular, the character line of Lan Phuong - Doan Quoc Dam has more "land" to express and leave an impression. In particular, the role of Ha - the mischievous, childish wife, but devoted to her family, is skillfully transformed by Lan Phuong.

With "Thuong ngay nang ve", "Huong vi tinh than", "Nguoi mot nha"... also exploiting stories about maternal love, paternal love, and sibling love in the family to remind viewers of the value of family love and relationships in life.

Still limited

It is not difficult to see that the common disadvantages of Vietnamese TV dramas are limitations in the script, lack of breakthrough content, easy and illogical handling of situations, lack of depth in character psychology... making the film's flow sometimes boring, the story becomes predictable.

As with "My Father, the One Who Stays", the film's continuous push of the 5 fathers and sons into tragedy has made viewers angry. In the most recent developments, the two fathers Binh and Chinh have to struggle to find a solution to the economic problem while also dealing with Mr. Huan and Mrs. Lien - the supporting characters who hurt the family. Or the detail that Nguyen's sister died differently from the original has become a controversial topic, the way Viet handled the collision with customers at the coffee shop has also been criticized as old-fashioned and unrealistic...

Previously, the movie "My family is suddenly happy" also received mixed reactions because it was too long-winded and rambling to the point of causing frustration. For example, the scene where Thanh (Doan Quoc Dam) lost his ring and was afraid his wife would find out was dragged on for 3 episodes, or the situation where Tram Anh (Kha Ngan) went to entertain guests with Khai (Trong Lan) was unreasonable when she was originally portrayed as having a strong personality, being the daughter of a rich family, and owning a wedding dress shop...

With "The Taste of Love", although there are many dramatic scenes, the film still falls into a rut when it overuses the love scenes between Nam (Phuong Oanh) and Long (Manh Truong). The scene where Nam recalls the couple enjoying the scenery in the river area and jumping into the water to catch snails, then asks Long to take a photo, then he mentions that he wants his wife to have twins is also commented as awkward, long-winded, and unnecessary.

This shows that, despite many bright spots, Vietnamese family films still need to improve to maintain their long-term appeal. In addition to the script factor, many works also have errors in the visual aspect, or the lack of subtle advertising, which affects the viewing experience. However, with innovation and reasonable investment, films in the above genre can reap success and maintain their appeal on prime time.
