A series of universities announced that they will not use the high school transcript admission method from 2025. In addition, many schools have drastically cut the quota for this method or only use it as a preliminary admission condition.
Up to now, at least 6 higher education institutions across the country have announced that they will not use high school transcripts for university admission in 2025. Why did the schools decide to do so?
Eliminate high school transcript consideration to ensure input quality
Ho Chi Minh City University of Education has announced that from 2025, the school will not use high school academic results (report cards) in admissions, only retaining the threshold conditions to ensure input quality to meet the requirements according to the admission regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Trung, vice principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said: "The changes in next year's enrollment of the school are to meet the needs of students studying under the 2018 general education program.
This is done with the common view of ensuring fairness, transparency, creating favorable conditions for candidates and ensuring improved input quality, meeting the requirements of the modern labor market."
In previous years, high school transcript scores were used by this school to independently consider admission to the school (10% of the target) or in combination with the ability assessment test scores (30-40% of the target).
"With the new program, each student will choose and have a transcript score in different combinations, so admission by this method is no longer suitable.
In 2025, in the direction of using specialized competency assessment exams as the main method, the school will organize this exam as an independent exam," Mr. Trung added.
In 2025, the National Economics University plans to maintain the same three admission methods as in 2024, including: direct admission (2%), combined admission (83%) and admission based on the results of the 2025 high school graduation exam (15%).
Since 2024, this school has eliminated the method of admission based on high school transcripts. According to the school representative, for many years, most excellent students in specialized schools (the group eligible for admission based on transcripts) have qualified for admission based on international certificates or separate exam scores. Eliminating the consideration of transcripts reduces the virtual rate because a candidate can use multiple methods.
Previously, top universities in the country such as Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hanoi Medical University, and Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy also did not consider admission based on high school transcripts.
These schools only consider admission based mainly on high school graduation exam scores, or combine exam scores with international language certificates, consider thinking assessment test scores, consider international SAT scores...
Ho Chi Minh City National University removes priority for admission based on high school transcripts
Ho Chi Minh City National University has agreed to implement three university admission methods from 2025, while encouraging schools to develop a combined admission method.
With this decision, schools under Ho Chi Minh City National University will eliminate the method of giving priority to admission of high school students (a form of admission based on transcripts for admission of high school graduates from 149 high schools according to the annually updated list).
Schools believe that cutting down on admission methods will be fairer and help candidates avoid confusion.
According to Mr. Tran Thien Phuc - Vice Principal of the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), in 2025 the school will continue to deploy and strengthen admission by synthesizing many criteria that have been applied quite effectively in the past 3 years (from 2022 to present).
With comprehensive admission, candidates are evaluated by combining the components and corresponding weights used for admission.
Academic criteria (90%) include three components: high school study scores (six semesters corresponding to the admission combination); high school graduation exam scores (subjects in the admission combination); and test scores assessing capacity and social activities, literature, sports and fine arts.
Preliminary selection by reviewing high school transcripts
According to the 2025 regular university enrollment direction that Nha Trang University has just announced, it is noteworthy that the school said it will organize enrollment in 2 steps: preliminary selection and selection.
In which, the preliminary selection (considered a necessary condition) is based on the high school academic results (report cards) of the subjects specified by the school. After that, the school organizes the selection (considered a sufficient condition) based on the 2025 high school graduation exam results or the results of the competency assessment exam.
With the high school academic results, each major and training major of the school, candidates must study a certain number of subjects at the high school level according to the school's regulations. The results of these subjects must meet the minimum requirements announced by the school every year.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. To Van Phuong, head of training department of Nha Trang University, said that the announcement of the 2025 enrollment direction aims to provide the right career orientation for students studying the new general education program.
"With the above orientation, the school does not use academic transcript scores for admission as in previous years. This criterion is only a preliminary condition for candidates when applying for admission to the school.
In the combination of high school graduation exam scores, the school also expects to consider a combination of 4 subjects but needs support from the admission software system. The school builds the above admission plan to prepare for the situation where the admission system does not fully support the combined consideration," Mr. Phuong added.
