Messi recently spoke out about speculation that he will delay his international retirement for at least another year, to compete with Argentina at the 2026 World Cup. The former Barca striker will turn 39 during the group stage of the tournament.
In 2022, Messi led Argentina to glory in Qatar. This is probably the most prestigious championship that he has longed for throughout his career.
With La Albiceleste winning their third World Cup and his personal legacy established as one of the greatest players of all time, many expected Messi to announce his retirement from international football immediately after the tournament.
However, in the following years, the Inter Miami striker still played an indispensable role in the national team and just shone in the Copa America championship last year.

The 2026 World Cup is just over a year away, and there are many calls for Messi to continue defending the title with Argentina.
When asked about the possibility of attending the 2026 World Cup during a recent podcast appearance, the Inter Miami star insisted that he was in no rush to make a decision.
The 37-year-old striker admitted that this season will play a key role in helping him decide whether to attend next year's World Cup or not.
"This year will be key to see how I decide on the 2026 World Cup. I will consider it carefully and not rush into setting a goal. I will check my body every day and see how I am physically, and I have to be honest with myself," Messi told Simplemente Futbol.
Since his surprise move to MLS in 2023 to join David Beckham's Inter Miami, Messi has been reunited with former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez.
After retiring from international football at the end of last year, Suarez insisted his long-time friend had no plans to do the same.
"Retirement? Messi has the desire to play in the 2026 World Cup with Argentina," the Uruguayan told Ovacion.
