STAYING UP LATE TO FINISH THE "DEADLINE"

According to the 2018 General Education Program, students' learning activities do not stop at just studying theory or doing exercises, but also include experiments, games, research projects, etc. After school hours, at night is the time for students to complete the deadlines of the above learning activities.

Nguyen Ngoc Bao Hoang, a 12th grader at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City), said he stayed up late almost every day while completing a history interdisciplinary project. "In this project, my friends and I researched historical figures, selected information, then designed publications and presented ideas. My friends and I had a month to prepare. Because we studied all day, meetings often took place late at night," Hoang said.

Vu Duc Anh, a student at Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), said he stays up until midnight to self-study skills to supplement his subjects in class. "Some activities such as presentations, dramatization, graphic design, etc. require design or photography skills. To master them, I spend a lot of time self-studying online and practicing. Although I am tired and sleep deprived, I feel it is worth it because I have developed new skills," Anh said.

Because they often stay up late, during recess, some students take advantage of the opportunity to sleep to regain their strength.

After two school days, Ngo Gia Huy, a 12th grader at Nguyen Huu Huan High School (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City), participates in club activities and extracurricular activities. "I have a lot of work to do in the evening, so I only have time to study late at night. So I have to go to bed late to finish my homework," Huy said.

D EASILY GETTING Caught Up In Social Media

Vu Thi Mai Ngan, a student of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry, commented that night time is the most effective time to work. "I have a habit of spending a long enough time doing my work. Only then can I have enough concentration to complete it. So night time is the ideal time to meet deadlines because I am not affected by other things such as part-time work, living expenses...", Ngan said.

However, sometimes Ngan still gets distracted when working at night. "I feel like the night is still long, so I do other things like surfing social networks, watching short videos... So there are days when I don't have time to complete my tasks. However, once I decide to stay up late, I will try to finish it, except for some tasks that are too much, then I will try to do them during the day of the following days," Ngan said.

Similarly, Le Huu Bao Thy, a student in class 11A13 at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (District 3), also got distracted because she was absorbed in content on social networks. "During the 8 hours of studying at school, I was not allowed to use my phone. When I sat down at my desk at home in the evening, I took advantage of the opportunity to use my phone to update news or entertain myself. But because I was so engrossed in surfing the content, I forgot about my lessons," Thy admitted.

Dang Cam Tu, a student of the Psychology Department at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University), confided: "Short videos on TikTok or Instagram are often very attractive. I have a fear of missing out on information (called FOMO - fear of missing out) on social networks, so I often surf past my bedtime." In addition to using social networks, Tu stays up until 2-3 am to study because he "can't rest assured going to bed if he hasn't finished his work." For Tu, staying up late is very difficult to quit. "My biological rhythm is completely out of sync with normal, making it very difficult to adjust. In addition, I have also suffered from insomnia for a long time, so I can't change my habits right away," Tu said.

STAYING UP LATE AFFECTS THE PSYCHOLOGY

Master - Doctor Bui Diem Khue, Vice President of the Vietnam Insomnia Association, lecturer at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, said that staying up late affects the body's biological rhythm. "The hormones in the body all have a time to achieve optimal efficiency. For example, growth hormone, cortisol and hormones that regulate eating and drinking are secreted at the right time to help the body develop well and have a stable spirit. In addition, internal organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs... need time to rest. If you stay up late, the hormones or internal organs are not in the normal cycle, making your body recover poorly," Doctor Khue informed.

Let's say you usually go to bed at 1 a.m., then for the next week, aim to go to bed at 12:30 a.m. Every two or three days, go to bed 15 minutes earlier, so that after a week you reach your goal.

In addition to affecting biological rhythms, staying up late can be a factor affecting the psychology of high school students. Doctor Khue said: "Staying up late can be the cause and also the consequence of psychological problems. When staying up late, the sleep structure will be disrupted and unstable, while sleep is very important to help the brain process emotions. Therefore, staying up late makes the psychological recovery function unstable."

In the case of staying up late as a consequence, Dr. Khue said that when there is a psychological problem, people seek other activities to do such as surfing social networks, trying to complete homework... This unintentionally delays the biological rhythm caused by that psychological problem. In addition, those with mental disorders will have their schedules affected. "Depending on the root problem, whether it is staying up late or a psychological problem, there will be a way to adjust accordingly," Dr. Khue shared.

TO CHANGE THE HABIT OF STAYING UP LATE

According to Dr. Khue, biologically, high school and university students tend to sleep later than other age groups, especially middle-aged people. "High school and university students often sleep about 30 minutes to 1 hour later than other groups because their biological rhythms are later. Although this is a natural development, if you indulge in the need to stay up late and sleep later and later, it will affect your health. The brain needs time to rest, so even if you find working at night effective, you will gradually lose alertness and concentration without realizing it. High school and university students need to set limits when working at night," said Dr. Khue.

According to Dr. Khue, it is not easy to give up the habit of staying up late, but you can adjust your bedtime 30 minutes earlier each week. "Suppose you usually go to bed at 1 a.m., then next week, set a goal of going to bed at 12:30 a.m. Every two or three days, go to bed 15 minutes earlier, so that after a week you will reach your goal," Dr. Khue shared.

To adjust the biological rhythm faster, Dr. Khue noted the lighting factor: "The brighter the room, the more alert you will be. Reduce the light to a minimum, turn off devices at least 30 minutes before going to bed to avoid stimulation of both light and the brain."

In addition, Dr. Khue noted that you should avoid drinks such as tea, coffee, energy drinks... because they contain caffeine, the alertness effect will last 6-8 hours after drinking. According to Dr. Khue, fixing a wake-up time in the morning every day, including weekends, and limiting afternoon naps will help students go to sleep more easily at night.

There is a phenomenon of students often falling asleep in class.

A homeroom teacher in District 3 (HCMC) noted that there are currently cases of students feeling tired, lacking energy, and falling asleep in class. "This is a sign that students may be having difficulty managing their time, living habits, or learning pressure. The school always tries to arrange extracurricular activities at convenient times to ensure that students do not have to stay up late to prepare," this teacher commented.

The male teacher also shared: "I often talk to students about the importance of sleep to maintain health and learning efficiency. For students who often fall asleep in class, I will talk to parents to learn about the students' schedules and provide timely support."
