Pedagogy industry increases its attraction

The Ministry of Education and Training informed that in 2024, Pedagogy is one of the four majors with the highest number of candidates registering for admission, up to 85% compared to last year (equivalent to about 200,000 wishes).

Typically, at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, the number of candidates registering to enter the school this year increased by 100% compared to 2023 with 31,252 candidates. Meanwhile, Hanoi University of Education also recorded an increase in the number of students registering to enter the school equivalent to the national average, about 40,000 wishes. Previously, the school's capacity assessment exam also had a number of candidates participating 2.5 times higher than last year.

Candidates are rushing to register, but the enrollment quota assigned by the Ministry of Education and Training to teacher training colleges is small. At the same time, schools reserve most of their quotas for early admission methods, resulting in not many remaining quotas based on high school graduation exam scores. For example, some majors in History Education, Physics Education, Chemistry Education, etc. of Hanoi National University of Education have "a handful" of remaining quotas. The race to enter teacher training colleges has become more fierce than ever.

According to forecasts from schools training in Pedagogy, the benchmark score for this year's major could increase by up to 2 points.

Decode the reason

Winning the third prize in the national excellent student contest in History, Nguyen Khanh Huyen - a 12th grader at Nguyen Van Troi High School (Ha Tinh) - was directly admitted to a series of prestigious universities. Finally, she decided to study History Education at Hanoi National University of Education.

Khanh Huyen shared that new media is the major she wants to study the most. She has been researching schools that offer this major such as the Diplomatic Academy, the Academy of Journalism and Communication, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi)... for the past 3 years. However, the female student still chose Pedagogy to pursue for the next 4 years because of the cost of university tuition and a stable job after graduation.

“I was born into a farming family, not well-off. I have three siblings, and I am the eldest. Therefore, I hope to soon have a stable job so that I can support my parents and guide my younger siblings,” Huyen said, adding that she does not want her university expenses to become a burden on her family. If she studies pedagogy, not only will she not have to pay tuition fees, but the government will also support her monthly living expenses…

In addition, the attraction of History and the inspiration from teachers are the motivation for Khanh Huyen to study Pedagogy. "My family also respects and supports my decision" - she happily said.

However, the female student still expressed concerns and worries about her choice, in which job opportunities after graduation are what she mentioned most.

“Many people advised me to study Literature, Math, English…so that after graduation, it would be easier to find a job than History. But I think that if I have the ability, try hard and am determined, opportunities will still come to me” - Khanh Huyen said.

Meanwhile, not worrying about tuition fees, Nguyen Thi Hong Thao - a 12th grade student at Nguyen Du High School for the Gifted (Dak Lak) - prioritized the suitability of the Pedagogy major for herself when registering her first choice at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.

“I discovered that I like sharing stories and exchanging my knowledge with people, so I think the Pedagogy industry will be suitable for me,” she said.

Hong Thao believes that currently, job opportunities for pedagogical students after graduation are quite open due to the great demand of society. The diverse working environment, including the system of public and private schools, is expanding. This is also one of the reasons for me to study Pedagogy.
