With ambitions to reach new heights, Google has made investments in many different areas, even very bold. However, Google Search users today may be at risk if they trust the company's artificial intelligence (AI) misinformation, specifically AI Overview - a new version of Search that often provides machine-generated information.
False Feedback Content Given by Google Search Based on AI Overview
Google co-founder Sergey Brin recently made headlines for encouraging employees to work 60 hours a week to develop AI products. This comes amid a series of AI Overview errors. For example, a BGR reporter asked AI Overview the question, “Is this the year 2025?” However, the AI confidently stated that “The current year is 2024,” despite citing a Wikipedia article that contradicted it. This incident shows that Google’s AI is not only inaccurate, but also prone to plagiarism.
Google Search is getting worse - why?
Google Search used to be a powerful search engine, capable of providing accurate information for even the simplest of questions. Now, it seems to have become an unreliable source of information, with misleading and inaccurate answers. This has led to a third of web users no longer using Google as much as before.
One of the main reasons for this decline is not because of competition from other search engines, but because Google has lost sight of the core values that made it successful. The company has gone from a platform that encourages curiosity to a machine-based system focused solely on maintaining its monopoly.
About 1/3 of users no longer use Google Search as much as they used to
Sergey Brin’s criticism of employees for not working enough hours seems like a misplaced attempt to shift blame. The real problem is leadership. If Google is falling behind in AI, the blame lies with the top brass, not the employees. Remember, Google itself has spent billions of dollars developing its AI tools.
Since Sergey Brin and Larry Page stepped down as CEOs in 2019, Google has transformed from an innovative company into a risk-averse bureaucracy. Under Sundar Pichai, Google has been slow to move forward with AI, despite owning many of the foundational technologies. If Sergey Brin wants to understand why Google has lost its edge, he should ask himself and Larry Page why they handed the company over to an interim CEO instead of continuing to fight to shape their own future.
