'Literature needs to transform to join the general flow in the new era'

According to the Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association, in the current policy of streamlining the apparatus, literary work also needs to change to meet the development requirements of the times.

Literature needs to innovate to join the general flow of the country in the new era - the era of national growth.

That was the statement of Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association Nguyen Quang Thieu at the Conference to summarize literary work in 2024 held on December 12 in Hanoi.

Referring to Resolution 18 on streamlining the political system's apparatus towards efficiency and effectiveness, poet Nguyen Quang Thieu affirmed that this is a correct and urgent policy in the current context and that literary work also needs to change to meet the development requirements of the times.

In the report summarizing literary activities in 2024 and planning directions for the new period, poet Nguyen Quang Thieu emphasized: “2024, the last year of the 10th term (2020-2025) is associated with many important events of the country. This is also a special period marking major turning points, an opportunity for organizations to transform and change.”

In 2025, the Vietnam Writers Association will hold the 11th Congress of the Association. The President of the Vietnam Writers Association hopes that the 11th Executive Committee will have strategic innovation in thinking to contribute to the development of the country's literature.

According to poet Nguyen Quang Thieu, the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Writers Association has been and is continuing to make innovations. Literature needs to integrate into the general flow. If we do not think and look at the problem comprehensively, we can completely be pushed aside and have no ability to develop.

Regarding the work of reviewing literary awards and admitting new members in 2024, the Chairman of the Vietnam Writers' Association acknowledged the effective and responsible working style of the professional councils.

Regarding foreign affairs, poet Huu Viet said that 2024 is a year of quite active foreign affairs activities of the Association. Many embassies and diplomatic agencies have discussed cooperation, translation and promotion of literature.

On the part of the Vietnam Writers Association in international activities, in August 2024, poet Nguyen Quang Thieu worked with Harvard University on President Ho Chi Minh's documents and visited and worked with American veteran writers; in December 2024, poet Huu Viet attended the Cambodian National Writers' Day and worked with writers from countries with the Mekong River flowing through...

In addition to traditional partners, the Association has also expanded relations with new partners such as: South Africa, Türkiye, Pakistan, India and a number of other cultural diplomatic organizations. The Association also proposed and received State approval to complete procedures to award the Friendship Medal to two American veteran writers and poets: Kevin Bowen and Bruce Weigl. This has received positive feedback from domestic and international public opinion./.
