In the first half of 2024, a series of ransomware attacks emerged strongly targeting key businesses in Vietnam, causing great damage to businesses and the community. These attacks paralyzed information systems, disrupted operations and businesses, and caused significant financial losses.
Many businesses were forced to pay large ransoms to retrieve data and restore systems, losing the trust of customers and partners. The damage was not limited to the economy but also had a long-term impact on the reputation and competitiveness of Vietnamese businesses in the international market.
At the workshop, Mr. La Manh Cuong, Vice President of Research and Development, General Director of OPSWAT Vietnam shared: “The main reason why businesses in Vietnam become targets of cybercrime is due to inadequate preparation of cybersecurity defense systems to protect their critical network systems from sophisticated attacks.
Most businesses in Vietnam have not invested enough resources to deploy effective security measures. In addition, the use of unlicensed software, which is not updated regularly, and the lack of awareness of cybersecurity among the business community also contribute to the increased risk of attacks.”
“To stop ransomware before a business is attacked, it is essential to deploy a comprehensive security solution, based on a zero-trust philosophy, to effectively protect their organization's cybersecurity.
Enterprises should simultaneously apply specialized security technologies for critical network systems such as content sanitization and reconstruction (CDR) technology, multi-application malware detection technology (Multiscanning), and data leakage prevention (DLP) technology to maximize their cybersecurity defense capabilities.
These technologies help eliminate hidden threats in files, detect and block malware before they have a chance to penetrate the system," Mr. Cuong added.

According to a report by Trend Micro, Mr. Le Minh Nghia, a security consultant, commented: “In the first half of 2023, ransomware attacks increased by 50% compared to the previous year. This situation is happening in the direction of the number of attacks as well as their scale increasing.
Most ransomware attacks today involve the extortion of sensitive personal or commercial data for ransom, which increases the complexity of the incident and poses a greater risk of costs and reputational damage.”
In defense against ransomware, Trend Micro has developed two new generation multi-layered solutions: Trend Vision One Cybersecurity Platform (a diverse and unified security platform that helps organizations manage comprehensive security with powerful prevention, detection and response capabilities, supported by artificial intelligence, leading threat intelligence and research teams) and Threat Intelligence (providing information on emerging threats, especially ransomware, helping organizations grasp information early and take preventive measures).
The workshop took place in a lively atmosphere, with many questions and in-depth discussions from the delegates.
With a lot of practical implementation experience, experts shared more clearly about proactive knowledge to prevent, combat and respond effectively to ransomware attacks.
The deployment of these solutions is essential to help businesses in Vietnam improve their defense capabilities and protect their critical network systems from increasingly sophisticated and continuous cyber attacks.
As a result, businesses are more proactive in developing disaster recovery and contingency plans (DRPs) to minimize operational disruptions caused by ransomware attacks.
