Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên20/09/2024

A survey by Thanh Nien reporters shows that most primary and secondary schools in Ho Chi Minh City do not allow students to bring mobile phones into school and prohibit their use, even during recess. Nguyen Van Phu Secondary School (District 11) requires students not to bring mobile phones into school, unless the teacher tells them in advance that there is a subject that requires the use of mobile phones for learning purposes. Then students are allowed to bring mobile phones into school, and only use them when permitted, under the supervision of the teacher.

If students bring cell phones to school, they will have to hand them over to the teacher for supervision. Luong The Vinh Secondary School (District 1) also prohibits students from bringing cell phones to school or using them during school hours. If students bring cell phones, they must hand them over to the supervisor or teacher at the beginning of class and get them back at the end of class...

In the group of high schools, from the beginning of the new school year 2024 - 2025, Thanh Loc High School (District 12) has applied a rule that strictly prohibits students from using mobile phones during the 8 regular classes per day at school, including recess. In addition, the school also requires teachers not to use mobile phones during teaching hours. Similarly, Truong Chinh High School (District 12) prohibits students from using mobile phones during regular school hours, including recess. For many years, Le Thanh Tong Primary - Secondary - High School (Tan Phu District) has required students not to bring mobile phones into the school grounds for any reason, even when they return to the dormitory.

Ban to focus on studying

After Thanh Nien Newspaper reported that many public and private schools in Ho Chi Minh City banned students from using cell phones, most of the comments sent by readers agreed. BĐ nK_aH shared: "I support banning students from using cell phones, because some students, when they come to class, focus less on studying and more on chatting and playing games. There are subjects that require using cell phones in class, and certainly the students' ability to self-manage this matter is very low."

Sharing the same view, BĐ Yen Vu said: "It is not by chance that in recent years many developed countries have begun to have regulations prohibiting students from using cell phones. The harm of cell phones to students is greater than the benefits they bring. It is appropriate for schools to flexibly place additional landline phones for students to contact when there is an urgent matter."

In addition, there are many opinions suggesting to expand this regulation, such as BĐ Huân Nguyễn Cao: "I completely agree with the ban on students using cell phones in school, including during recess. We should boldly implement it nationwide."

"The use of cell phones in schools should be completely banned, with general regulations from the Ministry of Education and Training, not just this or that school. The use of cell phones should be banned so that teachers and students can concentrate on teaching and learning," said Nguyen Manh, a determined leader.

How to use your phone effectively

Besides many comments in agreement, some BDs expressed concerns. BD M8bJQody acknowledged: "I don't think this is reasonable. At the age of 15, students are already aware of their own behavior. Whether or not they study depends on their awareness. For those who are conscious of studying, I believe that if they use their phones during class, that is definitely a necessary purpose. But for those who are not conscious of studying, no matter how much they are forbidden, it will be the same. Moreover, this prohibition is a bit of an infringement on freedom, I think it should be applied like at university level."

BĐ TYqUSFV analyzed: "The 2018 education program is active teaching, student-centered, flipped classroom, students learn the lesson content themselves, teachers only guide and synthesize knowledge. Require digital transformation with digital learning materials, grade books, digital report cards..., evaluate students online, 30% self-study on digital learning materials. Banning phones means that class is only one-way, teachers lecture and students only listen. So it's back to the traditional way of teaching, not according to the 2018 Program".

According to BĐ Đạt Trí Nguyễn: "We should not completely ban it, but we should educate students on how to use phones properly. The most feared thing is to abuse them to play games..., but cell phones are very useful for studying, such as looking up information, referring to lectures, and finding study materials."

"I am a teacher. I strictly prohibit students from using phones or headphones when I teach. Students are only allowed to use phones when I allow them or to use phones to look up or find images or videos related to the lesson. The ban on students bringing phones to school needs to be flexible and harmonious," said Mai Anh Toan, Deputy Head of the Department.

* I support banning students from using cell phones in all schools nationwide during class and recess.

Central Research

* Students are not connected, not interactive, and their apathy stems from using their phones. It is unreasonable to use phones during class or playtime and must be completely banned.

Tien Chuong Pham

* Banning is not always good. In many countries, students still use phones in school. It is important to educate students to limit and avoid the harmful effects of using phones too much.
