On February 14, the Ukrainska Pravda website reported that Ukrainian unmanned boats attacked and damaged a large Russian landing ship off the coast of Crimea, the peninsula that Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
The news site posted several videos showing smoke rising over the sea off southern Crimea, as well as helicopters flying over the sea.
Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Honcharenko said the targeted warship was the Caesar Kunikov, which took part in Russia's military operations in Georgia in 2008.
On the same day, the Ukrainian military confirmed that it had destroyed the landing ship Caesar Kunikov off the coast of Crimea in the Black Sea.
"The Armed Forces of Ukraine, together with the intelligence unit of the Ministry of Defense, destroyed the large landing ship Caesar Kunikov. It was in the territorial waters of Ukraine near the Alupka region at the time of the attack," the Ukrainian military said in a statement on the Telegram app.
The Kyiv Independent news site quoted information from the General Staff of the Ukrainian army saying that the landing ship was sunk on the morning of February 14 (local time).
According to the British Ministry of Defense, this is the fourth landing ship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet to be sunk since the outbreak of hostilities in February 2022.
Previously, the British Ministry of Defense also said that the Russian landing ship Novocherkassk was "completely destroyed" by a Ukrainian missile in December 2023 while docked at the port of Feodosia in Crimea.
The Novocherkassk is nearly 370 feet long and is designed to land and carry armored vehicles. It has a crew of 87 and can carry 240 troops. The Caesar Kunikov has similar specifications, according to the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
Russia has not commented on the latest developments regarding the Caesar Kunikov ship.
Earlier on February 14, RIA news agency reported that Russian air defense systems destroyed nine Ukrainian drones over Russia's Belgorod and Voronezh regions, as well as over the Black Sea.
In December 2023, Ukrainian cruise missiles struck a large Russian landing ship in Crimea, killing at least one person.
