Musk was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by a Norwegian MP for defending free speech on Twitter and providing satellite internet to Ukraine.

Norwegian MP Marius Nilsen argued on February 20 that the American billionaire deserves the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize for his staunch defense of people's right to dialogue, freedom of speech and expression by acquiring the social network Twitter, which has been renamed X.

Nilsen also praised Musk for providing Starlink sanitation internet service to the Ukrainian military after conflict broke out in the country in February 2022.

"Many of the technology companies founded, owned or run by Mr. Musk are aimed at improving society, increasing understanding of both Earth and space, enabling global communication and connectivity, thereby helping to make the world a more connected and safer place," the Norwegian MP said.

Billionaire Musk is famous for his acquisition of social network Twitter and renaming it X. He later lifted the ban on many accounts, including the personal account of former US President Donald Trump, who was banned by Twitter after the Capitol Hill riots.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to a five-member committee selected by the Norwegian parliament. According to founder Alfred Nobel's will, the prize is awarded to "the person or organization which shall have done the most or the best work to promote fraternity between nations, to reduce or abolish standing armed forces, and to hold and promote peace congresses."

Those who can nominate candidates are scholars, university professors, scientists, Nobel laureates, parliamentarians... This year's Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded in October.

Many familiar names have been nominated this year, including former President Donald Trump, Pope Francis, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.
