Vietnam is one of the countries with the highest infertility rate in the world, with 50% of cases occurring in people under 30 years old.
On September 22, 2024, in Hanoi, Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital (AF HANOI) organized the "5th Scientific Conference" with the participation of many leading obstetrics experts.
The workshop is an opportunity for experts to present new research results, update and share knowledge in diagnosing and classifying each case, thereby finding effective treatment methods for infertile patients.

Scientific research in the treatment of infertility in general and male infertility in particular is very important, contributing to bringing new knowledge to find optimal treatment methods for patients.
In many cases in clinical practice, doctors have made new discoveries that have never been recorded in medical literature before, so scientific research will create conditions for professionals to analyze, discuss and find answers to these problems together.
In fact, many research reports have been successfully applied in examination, bringing high treatment efficiency to patients at Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital.
MSc. Dr. Le Thi Thu Hien, Professional Director, Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital, said that in addition to daily medical examination and treatment activities, Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital also pays special attention to scientific research activities.
Scientific research helps create new knowledge with high reliability; improve the quality and safety of treatment for patients, increase efficiency at a reasonable cost.
Not only that, scientific research also creates conditions for doctors and medical staff to continuously improve their knowledge and skills when looking at problems in their professional work with the goal of bringing the best results to patients.
According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), Vietnam is one of the countries with the highest infertility rate in the world, with 50% of cases occurring in people under 30 years old.
In Vietnam, each year there are about 1 million infertile couples, with infertility accounting for about 7.7%. The rate of infertility due to men accounts for 40%, due to women accounts for 40%, 10% due to both husband and wife and 10% of unknown causes. This shows that the causes of infertility come from both men and women. In recent years, the group of causes of male infertility has begun to receive more attention than in the previous period.
After examining and treating patients, experts and doctors have identified groups of causes that can cause male infertility such as: due to pathology (obstruction of the vas deferens; varicocele; retrograde ejaculation; infectious diseases...); genetic causes; unscientific lifestyle habits that affect sperm quality and quantity...
Infertility in Vietnam is on the rise, more and more couples are having difficulty conceiving, while the cost of infertility treatment is quite high. Experts suggest that health insurance should cover each step of infertility treatment.
It is known that the cost of infertility treatment in Vietnam is lower than many other countries, but it is still a huge barrier for patients. Experts suggest that health insurance should gradually cover this disease.
According to Professor, Dr. Nguyen Viet Tien, former Deputy Minister of Health, Chairman of the Vietnam Obstetrics and Gynecology Association, currently, the level of infertility treatment in Vietnam is considered equivalent to that of countries in the region, and technology is developing very quickly.
Our country currently has more than 50 reproductive support centers that can meet the treatment needs of infertile and subfertile people. IVF in Vietnam has achieved a high success rate, with up to 60% of IVF cycles achieving clinical pregnancy. However, the challenge is that the service price is still high compared to the income of most people.
Many infertile couples long to have children but cannot do so due to financial problems. Therefore, health insurance should support and gradually meet people's wishes for infertility treatment, while contributing to maintaining and stabilizing the quality and quantity of the population.
The leading obstetrics professor pointed out the paradox that patients who undergo treatment for diseases such as fibroid surgery without the need to have children are covered by health insurance, but if accompanied by infertility treatment, they must pay the entire cost themselves.
Health insurance currently does not support any techniques in the infertility treatment process, while many causes come from diseases: ovarian tumors, uterine fibroids, ovarian polyps...
In many countries around the world, infertility is considered a medical condition and health insurance covers it for patients. However, in foreign countries, the premiums are high, so these services are covered by health insurance.
Vietnam's insurance capacity cannot cover a number of services, including IVF, with the current insurance premium. Therefore, in the immediate future, according to Professor Tien, health insurance should cover infertile patients with the same medical conditions as others. In the future, if insurance is capable, it should pay attention to this group.
