The US dollar rose in the last trading session, after gloomy business data from around the world boosted risk sentiment and as hawkish comments from central banks added pressure to riskier currencies.

US business activity fell to a three-month low in June, as services growth contracted for the first time this year and a contraction in the manufacturing sector deepened, new data showed on June 23.
However, the overall picture shows that US economic growth picked up a notch in the second quarter, even as concerns persist that the US Federal Reserve's aggressive interest rate hikes over the past year will trigger a recession.
Earlier in the day, data showed that eurozone business growth virtually stalled in June. The manufacturing recession deepened, while the dominant services sector barely expanded as aggregate demand fell.
“We are starting to see signals from businesses that demand is starting to ease and that is leading to a recalibration of expectations for future output,” said Bipan Rai, head of North America FX strategy at CIBC Capital Markets.
Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said on June 22 that the central bank will adjust interest rates at a “cautious pace” from now on, but denied the possibility of a rate cut “coming soon.”
In contrast, the euro fell 0.57% to $1.08925, its lowest in three days against the dollar. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar rose 0.44% to 143.76 yen, its highest in more than seven months. The Japanese currency came under renewed pressure as the Bank of Japan (BOJ) maintained its ultra-dovish stance.
Meanwhile, the pound fell 0.30% to $1.271. The British currency has been under pressure from concerns that the UK economy could fall into recession after the Bank of England announced a major interest rate hike to combat persistent inflation.
