The annual Spring crop is considered the largest rice production season of the year not only in Hanoi but also in the entire Northern Midlands and Delta region. This is also the season with high demand for water supply for land preparation, flooding, and planting.
To ensure the efficiency of the 2025 Spring crop production, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has issued Notice No. 9193/TB-BNN-TCTL on the water intake schedule for the 2025 Spring crop in the Northern Midlands and Delta (including Hanoi).
Accordingly, in the Spring crop of 2025, there will be 2 additional discharges from hydroelectric reservoirs, supplementing water sources for the downstream, for a total of 12 days. Specifically, the first discharge: from 0:00 on January 12 to 24:00 on January 16, 2025 (5 days); the second discharge: from 0:00 on February 8 to 24:00 on February 14, 2025 (7 days).
Head of the Hanoi Irrigation and Disaster Prevention Sub-Department Nguyen Duy Du said that, based on Notice No. 9193/TB-BNN-TCTL, the Sub-Department has advised the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to send an official dispatch to districts, towns, 4 irrigation enterprises and related units requesting to focus on implementing the work of getting water for the 2025 Spring crop.
“Hanoi’s goal is to be the most proactive in taking water for the 2025 Spring crop in order to effectively utilize the increased water discharges from hydroelectric reservoirs; try to take enough water during the two discharges, not allowing additional time for water taking…” - Mr. Nguyen Duy Du added.
According to Hoang Thi Ha, Head of the Economic Department of Soc Son District, after receiving the official dispatch from the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the locality sent a document to communes and towns, requesting to step up information and propaganda so that people know about the water collection schedule and raise awareness in using water economically; strengthen the banks of the area and the banks of the fields to retain water on the field surface, avoiding water loss.
“The district is also reviewing rice growing areas that may not have enough irrigation water to study and propose a plan to convert to dry crops. At the same time, it is closely coordinating with the irrigation enterprise in effectively managing and operating the irrigation system in the area…” - Ms. Hoang Thi Ha added.
Meanwhile, Hanoi's irrigation enterprises are also thoroughly reviewing and evaluating the water intake capacity of irrigation works along the river in accordance with the expected water level conditions during water intake periods. Speeding up the renovation and upgrading of water intake works, ensuring smooth water delivery from the source to the fields.
Chairman of the Day River Irrigation Company, Tran Dinh Cuong, said that the unit is closely monitoring the water level developments on the river system; directing its affiliated enterprises to take advantage of the current water level to proactively operate pumping stations and organize early water intake (before hydroelectric reservoirs discharge water downstream as planned).
Regarding drought prevention work for the 2025 Spring crop, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Van Quyen requested irrigation enterprises to note that the river water level may be lower because the riverbed fluctuates due to the impact of floods after storm No. 3 (Yagi); works at risk of ineffective water intake such as Ap Bac pumping station, Lien Mac sluice and irrigation areas managed by Phu Sa field pumping station. On that basis, there will be solutions to supplement water sources or replace them if necessary; absolutely do not let there be a shortage of water for production in the 2025 Spring crop.
