Adjusting Power Plan VIII, renewable electricity can reach 74-75% by 2050

The adjusted plan aims to provide enough electricity for domestic demand, meeting the socio -economic development target with an average GDP growth rate of about 10.0%/year in the period 2026-2030, about 7.5%/year in the period 2031-2050. Electricity production and import output in 2030 is expected to reach 560.4-624.6 billion kWh and up to 1,360.1-1,511.1 billion kWh in 2050.

The focus of this planning adjustment is to strongly develop renewable energy sources (wind, solar, small hydropower, biomass, waste, etc.) to ensure energy security, promote energy transition and implement the commitment to net zero emissions by 2050. Specifically, the renewable energy target accounts for about 28-36% of total electricity output by 2030 and up to 74-75% by 2050.

The plan does not include new coal-fired thermal power projects, and gradually reduces old coal-fired power plants. For gas-fired power projects, priority is given to using domestic gas and supplementing with imported LNG if necessary.

The decision also estimates that the investment capital for developing power sources and transmission grids in the 2026-2030 period will be about 136.3 billion USD; in the 2031-2035 period, about 130.0 billion USD and in the 2036-2050 period, about 569 billion USD.

Previously, during the consultations on adjusting the Power Plan VIII, Dong Nai proposed increasing the allocation targets for rooftop solar power, small hydropower, and waste-to-energy. These are renewable energy types that the province has advantages in and that businesses need to meet green criteria in manufacturing goods and reducing emissions.
