Public 10th grade enrollment in Hanoi cools down

Add nearly 5,000 targets

According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, in the 2025-2026 school year, the city will enroll nearly 80,000 students in grade 10, of which 199 public high schools will be assigned 78,400 quotas, equivalent to 1,763 classes. The remaining 3 autonomous public high schools will be assigned 1,340 quotas, with 32 classes.

Compared to the 2024-2025 school year, this year, Hanoi has 70 high schools increasing their enrollment quotas. Ly Thuong Kiet High School (Long Bien) has the largest increase with 180 students. The schools: Viet Duc High School (Hoan Kiem), Da Phuc High School (Soc Son) and Thuong Tin High School (Thuong Tin) have increased their enrollment quotas by 135 students/school. In addition, 27 schools increased their quotas by 45, such as Phan Dinh Phung High School (Ba Dinh). In addition, 4 specialized high schools under the Hanoi Department of Education and Training increased their quotas by 500, equivalent to 14 classes.

Son Tay High School for the Gifted has the strongest increase in enrollment with 210 students. Chu Van An High School for the Gifted has increased 4 specialized classes with 135 students. Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted and Nguyen Hue High School for the Gifted have increased by 70 enrollments each. Thus, compared to the 2024 - 2025 school year, the total enrollment for public grade 10 in the 2025 - 2026 school year in Hanoi has increased by about 5,000.

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training assigned the enrollment target for grade 10 in the 2025-2026 school year to 29 vocational education and continuing education centers with a total target of 12,080 students.

Vocational education and continuing education centers organize 10th grade admission based on the results of training and studying of students at the secondary school level (if a grade is repeated, the results of the re-study year of that grade will be used). Students wishing to apply for admission to vocational education and continuing education centers will submit their applications from April 21.

Prof. Dr. Do Duc Thai, Hanoi National University of Education, proposed a comprehensive reform of the content and methods of examinations, especially in the 10th grade entrance exam. When students have mastered the knowledge and passed the transfer exam, they will have enough experience to orient their goals, understand their strengths and weaknesses in the implementation process, and from there, choose the right group of subjects when entering 10th grade.

Reduce pressure

Ms. Ngo Thi Kieu Linh, Principal of Le Loi Secondary School, Hoan Kiem (Hanoi) said that the school, parents and students have reduced some of the pressure.

About 50% of the school's 9th grade students will take the upcoming public high school entrance exam.

For the rest, parents and students have other options. At present, Le Loi Secondary School is trying to arrange to increase the number of extra classes for the 3 subjects of the 10th grade exam (Math, Literature, English) by 2-3 times compared to normal, both to consolidate the foundation and improve the knowledge of students.

During the final stage of the 10th grade entrance exam, Mr. Luu Van Thong, Principal of Cau Giay Secondary School (Hanoi) said that students need to divide their goals into small parts for each subject, should not take on too much, especially need to focus on systematizing knowledge and spend time on self-study. Especially during this stage, 9th grade students should practice sample exam questions, get into the habit of doing the test seriously during the time like the real exam to practice skills and mentality.

Hanoi is the locality with the largest educational scale in the country with nearly 3,000 kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, high schools and 29 continuing education centers, of which 119 are public high schools, fewer than secondary schools, primary schools and kindergartens. This puts great pressure on students taking the entrance exam for grade 10.

According to the leader of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, at the high school level, all types of schools ensure enough places for students. However, difficulties are concentrated in some densely populated inner-city districts with rapidly increasing student numbers. The department has advised and proposed that the city allocate resources to build more public high schools.

In fact, the investment in building public high schools has been and is being paid attention to by Hanoi City. In the period of 2021-2025, the city approved 7 projects to build and establish new high schools, including: Minh Ha (Thach That district); Tho Xuan (Dan Phuong district); 1 school in Cau Giay district; Viet Hung (Long Bien district); Uy No, Nguyen Khe and Viet Hung (Dong Anh district).

In the period of 2025-2030, Hanoi will have 30-35 new public schools to meet the learning needs of students. Districts have allocated land to build schools and are currently in the review phase. For example, Cau Giay district will build 3 new public high schools; Hoang Mai and Dong Anh districts will build more schools.

In particular, 7 modern, advanced primary, secondary and high schools have planned for medium-term public investment and allocated capital for construction. When the projects come into operation, they will overcome the shortage of schools in some densely populated districts.
