Injecting drugs into the wrong areas of the body can have serious consequences, especially for people who are physically weak or have underlying medical conditions.

A week before being admitted to the hospital, Ms. VTT, 54 years old, from Hai Phong, had a fever. Ms. T. went to the doctor and was diagnosed with dengue fever. After treatment, her fever stabilized and she was allowed to go home. However, a week later, she still felt pain in her neck and shoulders.

The patient is being treated at a medical facility.

Unable to bear the prolonged pain, Ms. T. was taken to a private clinic by her family. There, the doctor injected medicine directly into her neck and shoulder area in the hope of quickly relieving the pain.

However, just one day after the injection, Ms. T.'s condition became more serious. She started having a fever again, and at the same time, she experienced paralysis in both legs, which gradually spread to both arms, along with complete loss of sensation from the waist down.

When the symptoms did not improve, Ms. T. was taken to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases in a state of paralysis from the neck down.

She had very little movement in both arms and no movement in her legs. She also lost all feeling from the waist down and began to have difficulty breathing, requiring a ventilator.

Doctor Pham Thanh Bang, Emergency Department, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said that Ms. T. was diagnosed with septicemia due to cervical myelitis, suspected to be caused by staphylococcus.

After performing MRI, the results showed diffuse spinal cord injury, severe spinal cord edema, leading to loss of motor and sensory function. There was no sign of cervical spinal abscess, so the patient was indicated for open spinal decompression surgery and timely antibiotic treatment.

Staphylococcus, a gram-positive bacterium, was the cause of the sepsis in this case. This is a rare complication that usually occurs when bacteria enter the body through unsafe injections or IVs, causing osteomyelitis and directly affecting the spinal cord. Fortunately, however, the bacteria did not cause meningitis.

After Ms. T.'s infection stabilized, doctors continued to perform rehabilitation treatment to improve her mobility.

Ms. T. received treatment with a combination of traditional medicine, including electroacupuncture, gentle massage and exercise for two months after her pulpitis was controlled.

Doctor Nguyen Trung Nghia, Department of Traditional Medicine and Rehabilitation, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, shared that with Ms. T.'s condition of flaccid paralysis of both legs and weakness of the upper limbs, we used acupuncture on the upper limbs, the Jiaji point and the lower limbs to stimulate the nervous system and muscles, restoring motor and sensory functions.

After more than two months of treatment, Ms. T.'s condition has shown encouraging progress. Her upper limb strength has increased from 1/5 to 3/5, and she has gradually recovered her upper limb mobility, moving closer to the ability to perform daily activities independently.

For the lower limbs, from a state of complete loss of sensation, Ms. T. began to have a sense of touch, hot and cold sensation. However, the feeling of pain has not yet completely recovered.

Dr. Nghia added that with continuous rehabilitation support, Ms. T's condition will improve step by step. Although the recovery process is quite slow, with effort and perseverance, the patient can recover significantly in the near future.

Ms. T's story is an important warning about injections of unknown origin and not performed by qualified doctors.

Injecting drugs into the wrong areas of the body can have serious consequences, especially for people who are physically weak or have underlying medical conditions.

Doctors recommend that when experiencing body aches, people should go to reputable medical facilities for advice and proper treatment, and avoid self-injection without expert supervision.

To avoid dangerous situations like Ms. T's, people should go to official medical facilities when having health problems.

Using drugs or injecting drugs without a doctor's guidance can lead to unpredictable complications. Proper health care will help us protect our bodies and minimize unnecessary risks.
