The vetiver tree is mainly grown in the mountainous area of Nhu Xuan, where the climate and soil are suitable. The tree matures after about 2-3 years, at which time the roots reach the best quality for making incense.
To proactively source raw materials for producing vetiver, in 2023, Yen Cat vetiver Agricultural Service Cooperative planted 3 hectares of vetiver trees locally.
People often harvest in the dry season to ensure the roots do not get moldy, affecting the scent.
After harvesting, vetiver roots are washed and dried. This process requires skill to preserve the natural essential oils in the roots, which are the deciding factor in the quality of the vetiver scent.
After drying, the roots are ground into a fine powder. This powder not only has a distinctive aroma but also has natural adhesion, helping the incense sticks to easily shape and burn evenly.
To make the famous Yen Cat incense sticks, we must use completely natural ingredients such as: card, resin, charcoal, toothpicks...
The vetiver powder mixture after mixing will be compressed around bamboo sticks to form complete incense sticks. This process requires meticulousness to ensure the incense sticks are straight and not cracked.
Then, the incense is dried in natural sunlight, avoiding humid places to preserve the fragrance for a long time.
After drying, the vetiver will be bundled and carefully packaged to preserve its characteristic aroma.
With meticulousness in each stage, traditional incense products in Yen Cat town not only have economic value but also contribute to preserving the long-standing spiritual culture of Thanh Hoa people in particular and Vietnam in general.
